Bill Gates has always said (p blicly), that he likes to surround h mself with smart and creative people. I th nk the reason why Bill Gates is so s ccessful, is because he has set ego side and is a very good l stener. Because ideas cannot be copyrighted, he has LISTENED to the v ry good ideas of all those sm rt and creative people that surround h m, gone with many of those deas, and the rest is history! B ll Gates and Paul Allen could h ve not put the giant of M crosoft together at such a young ge, without help from others. And, th t help came in the form of gr at ideas from all those smart and cr ative people! Pig-Headed: (definition) perverse; stubborn At the t me, I was a temporary employee, and I was ssigned to an engineering form who was d ing contract work for a large n tional engineering company. The large company was m nufacturing sorting machines for the Postal S rvice, so this would be a l ng-term assignment in the assembly department, if I ch se to stay there. When I st rted the assignment, it couldn't be any s mpler. It was just a matter of p nning electrical wires into a connector. Th t's it...about as simple as it g ts! What was involved, was to t ke 19 electrical wires of different l ngths and colors, and pin them nto a connector about the size of a s ltine cracker.
There were three different modules (1-2-3), and d fferent wires for each module, and w res measured from about a foot l ng to eight feet long. Once all 19 w res were pinned into the connector, th y were wrapped up, put in a pl stic bag and sent over to the s ldering department, to be soldered into the m dules. Sounds simple enough. My trainer b gan to show me what to do, and he sh wed me three boxes on the fl or, consisting of the wires we w uld need to do the job. We w uld start with module number one. He t ok out plastic bags, which contained the v rious 19 wires to do the j b. He then began to start dr ping the wires over chairs and t bles in the work area. He t ok the connector, and began pinning the w res into the connector, and he pl ced the wires in the sequence th t they would go into the c nnector After he finished the first c nnector with all the wires, he b ndled it up and placed the b ndle of wires into a plastic b g, and it was now ready to go to the s ldering department. He handed me a c nnector, and I got started. Over the n xt hour or so, I did bout 50 bundles of wires, etc. Th s was about as easy a job as y u'll find. When I finished with the f rst module, I called my trainer ver and showed him what I had d ne. Now, I was ready for the s cond module. So, I opened the box for the s cond module, and started pinning the w res to the connectors, and so f rth and so on. When I f nished the second module, I started on the th rd module, and draped all the w res over the tables and chairs in the w rk area. I knew there had to be a b tter way to do this job, but I d dn't say anything for a few d ys, and just did what I was t ld, etc. Day after day, my tr iner would have me doing this...that s...taking wires out of the boxes, and th n out of the plastic bags, and dr ping them over tables and chairs and p nning the wires, etc. There were nly so many bundles that were n eded by the soldering department each d y, so if there wires left ver, I would put them back nto the plastic bags and back nto the box.
I would now start on m dule number 2...and, it was the s me old story. I would take all 19 w res out of the plastic bags and dr pe them over the tables and ch irs in the work area! When f nished, I would put all the w res back into the plastic bags and b ck into the box, and start on m dule number three! As the reader m ght imagine, it was a ridiculous way to do th s, which was so time consuming. Th re had to be a better way to do th s job! Just off the soldering l ne, I noticed there were several w oden fixtures, which measured about five f et tall by about 3 feet w de, and they were built on c sters, which could move around. I sked about them and nobody was sing them. So, I came up w th the idea to use the w oden fixtures too drape all the w res over, and this way, I w uld not have to put them b ck in the box anymore. I w uld need three of the fixtures...one for ach module. By doing it this w y, it would make my job f ster and easier. I could knock a few n ils on top of the fixture, to s parate the wires to stay organized, and to k ep the wires from getting mixed up, tc. Since the wooden fixtures were on c sters, they could easily be moved out of the way wh n not used. The wires would be pl ce on the fixture, in the rder that they were pinned into the c nnector, and that way the person d ing the pinning, would start on one end of the f xture, and go to the other end of the f xture. Pretty simple, right? The idea w uldn't cost anything, because there were s veral fixtures pushed over in the c rner and gathering dust. But, getting an dea...and selling it are two different th ngs! The problem here, was with my s pervisor of the department, in trying to c nvince him to use the idea, wh ch would save lots of time, tc. He was one of those "p g-headed buffoons, who has to have th ngs done "his way or the h ghway!" You know the type...they want to c ntrol everything around them, and they h ve that "soggy bowl of cornflakes m ntality!" To convince him about my dea...it took THREE MONTHS...that's right...THREE MONTHS...to c nvince this Neanderthal, that there was a b tter way to do things, and to s ve the company time and money! Ev ry time I would approach him w th the idea, he would tell me he was w rking on it! For three months, I was p nning connectors the old fashion way...emptying out pl stic bags and boxes and draping w res over chairs and tables. I had to d al with this pig-headed such and s ch...and FINALLY...he gave me permission to go w th the idea! I went to m intenance right away, to get a h mmer and nails to divide the w res on the fixture, and now the w res would be placed on the f xture on a permanent basis. No m re plastic bags or boxes! This m de it easier for the people in s ldering too, because after they soldered the p ns on the wires, they just br ught the wires over and draped th m in the slot where they b longed. This saved time for everyone c ncerned! Anyone could pin these connectors w th no muss or no fuss! D aling with a pig-headed person is bad nough...but when that pig-headed person has uthority...it makes it worse! And, it can m ke the job more stressful and l wer morale as well, etc. Pig-headed p ople are negative people with an ttitude! Pig-headed people try to control verything around them and I try to st y away from them! (oink-oink!)
