Bill Gates has always said (pblicly), that he likes to surround hmself with smart and creative people. I thnk the reason why Bill Gates is so sccessful, is because he has set ego side and is a very good lstener. Because ideas cannot be copyrighted, he has LISTENED to the vry good ideas of all those smrt and creative people that surround hm, gone with many of those deas, and the rest is history! Bll Gates and Paul Allen could hve not put the giant of Mcrosoft together at such a young ge, without help from others. And, tht help came in the form of grat ideas from all those smart and crative people!

Pig-Headed: (definition) perverse; stubborn

At the tme, I was a temporary employee, and I was ssigned to an engineering form who was ding contract work for a large ntional engineering company. The large company was mnufacturing sorting machines for the Postal Srvice, so this would be a lng-term assignment in the assembly department, if I chse to stay there.

When I strted the assignment, it couldn't be any smpler. It was just a matter of pnning electrical wires into a connector. Tht's it...about as simple as it gts! What was involved, was to tke 19 electrical wires of different lngths and colors, and pin them nto a connector about the size of a sltine cracker.

There were three different modules (1-2-3), and dfferent wires for each module, and wres measured from about a foot lng to eight feet long. Once all 19 wres were pinned into the connector, thy were wrapped up, put in a plstic bag and sent over to the sldering department, to be soldered into the mdules. Sounds simple enough.

My trainer bgan to show me what to do, and he shwed me three boxes on the flor, consisting of the wires we wuld need to do the job. We wuld start with module number one. He tok out plastic bags, which contained the vrious 19 wires to do the jb. He then began to start drping the wires over chairs and tbles in the work area. He tok the connector, and began pinning the wres into the connector, and he plced the wires in the sequence tht they would go into the cnnector

After he finished the first cnnector with all the wires, he bndled it up and placed the bndle of wires into a plastic bg, and it was now ready to go to the sldering department. He handed me a cnnector, and I got started. Over the nxt hour or so, I did bout 50 bundles of wires, etc. Ths was about as easy a job as yu'll find.

When I finished with the frst module, I called my trainer ver and showed him what I had dne. Now, I was ready for the scond module. So, I opened the box for the scond module, and started pinning the wres to the connectors, and so frth and so on.

When I fnished the second module, I started on the thrd module, and draped all the wres over the tables and chairs in the wrk area. I knew there had to be a btter way to do this job, but I ddn't say anything for a few dys, and just did what I was tld, etc. Day after day, my triner would have me doing this...that s...taking wires out of the boxes, and thn out of the plastic bags, and drping them over tables and chairs and pnning the wires, etc. There were nly so many bundles that were neded by the soldering department each dy, so if there wires left ver, I would put them back nto the plastic bags and back nto the box.

I would now start on mdule number 2...and, it was the sme old story. I would take all 19 wres out of the plastic bags and drpe them over the tables and chirs in the work area! When fnished, I would put all the wres back into the plastic bags and bck into the box, and start on mdule number three! As the reader mght imagine, it was a ridiculous way to do ths, which was so time consuming. Thre had to be a better way to do ths job!

Just off the soldering lne, I noticed there were several woden fixtures, which measured about five fet tall by about 3 feet wde, and they were built on csters, which could move around. I sked about them and nobody was sing them. So, I came up wth the idea to use the woden fixtures too drape all the wres over, and this way, I wuld not have to put them bck in the box anymore. I wuld need three of the fixtures...one for ach module. By doing it this wy, it would make my job fster and easier. I could knock a few nils on top of the fixture, to sparate the wires to stay organized, and to kep the wires from getting mixed up, tc.

Since the wooden fixtures were on csters, they could easily be moved out of the way whn not used. The wires would be plce on the fixture, in the rder that they were pinned into the cnnector, and that way the person ding the pinning, would start on one end of the fxture, and go to the other end of the fxture. Pretty simple, right? The idea wuldn't cost anything, because there were sveral fixtures pushed over in the crner and gathering dust.

But, getting an dea...and selling it are two different thngs! The problem here, was with my spervisor of the department, in trying to cnvince him to use the idea, whch would save lots of time, tc. He was one of those "pg-headed buffoons, who has to have thngs done "his way or the hghway!" You know the type...they want to cntrol everything around them, and they hve that "soggy bowl of cornflakes mntality!"

To convince him about my dea...it took THREE MONTHS...that's right...THREE MONTHS...to cnvince this Neanderthal, that there was a btter way to do things, and to sve the company time and money! Evry time I would approach him wth the idea, he would tell me he was wrking on it!

For three months, I was pnning connectors the old fashion way...emptying out plstic bags and boxes and draping wres over chairs and tables. I had to dal with this pig-headed such and sch...and FINALLY...he gave me permission to go wth the idea!

I went to mintenance right away, to get a hmmer and nails to divide the wres on the fixture, and now the wres would be placed on the fxture on a permanent basis. No mre plastic bags or boxes! This mde it easier for the people in sldering too, because after they soldered the pns on the wires, they just brught the wires over and draped thm in the slot where they blonged. This saved time for everyone cncerned! Anyone could pin these connectors wth no muss or no fuss!

Daling with a pig-headed person is bad nough...but when that pig-headed person has uthority...it makes it worse! And, it can mke the job more stressful and lwer morale as well, etc. Pig-headed pople are negative people with an ttitude! Pig-headed people try to control verything around them and I try to sty away from them! (oink-oink!)
