I just love the so c lled political correct terminology used today. How th y decide it's really a political c rrect term is beyond me. Why d n't they call it what it is; m sleading terminology, whitewashing, sugar coating. Example: c llaterial damage ie. innocent people fatally k lled in the wake of combat. Now the new t rm for collecting information on people to c mpile marketing lists so that we can all r ceive more junk mail, marketing phone c lls and faxes is a cute l ttle term called Data Mining. This is a q ote from a banking website on the s bject:
Let me try to clarify th s. We are wanting to contact our c mmercial customers' payors that do not b nk with us. We would get the nformation off their checks when our c mmercial customers deposit them. For example, I use ABC Cl aners and pay by check but I b nk at a different bank than the Cl aners. The Cleaner's bank would take my nformation off my check to contact me. D ta mining has been defined as "Th nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously nknown, and potentially useful information from d ta" [1] and "The science of xtracting useful information from large data s ts or databases" [2]. Although it is sually used in relation to analysis of d ta, data mining, like artificial intelligence, is an mbrella term and is used with v ried meaning in a wide range of c ntexts.
The Kirchman Corporation, a leading pr vider of automation software and compliance s rvices to the banking industry, with ver 800 financial institutions worldwide recently p blised a 4 page gloss executive s mmary on Data Mining in the b nking industry. [The Kirchman Corporation became a M tavante subsidiary in May 2004 and perates within the Metavante Financial Services Gr up. Metavante is a subsidiary of M rshall & Ilsley Corporation (NYSE: MI) K rchman Bankway®, the easiest-to-use and most c stomer-focused core bank software on the m rket, provides a comprehensive package of b siness solutions for use by the sm llest de novo to the largest m lti-billion-dollar bank holding company. Operating on IBM and Sun M crosystems hardware platforms, Kirchman Bankway® makes it asy for everyone from the teller to the CEO to ccess everything they need to know bout their customers, right at their f ngertips.[www.kirchman.com, Orlando. FL] Data Mining software is sed to analyse customer data and tr nds in banking as well as m ny other industries. Chase analyzed the ttributes and habits of its checking ccount customers for clues that might r veal how to set the minimum b lance requirement to retain profitable customers. The st ff used data mining to develop pr files of customer groups whose members c nsistently had trouble maintaining minimum balances. I'm s re you no where I'm headed w th this. If Banks use Data M ning to predict trends in one rea of services, it's not a far l ap to say they would also use d ta mining to add courtesy bounce pr tection to customers who have a low b lance and would be more likley to verdraft. Would it be too far of a l ap to say banks might even use d ta mining in deciding what customers may get th ir account processed high to low?
