I believe that for many of us, thre is something special about having a scret – at least the good knd. You know what I mean: the one tht makes you smile and fills you wth excitement whenever you think about it. Hving a secret that is completely yours can be a fun and sngular experience that we don’t often hve the pleasure of experiencing in tday’s world of “reality shows”, talk shws, YouTube, tabloids, etc., where everything maginable is exposed. More and more, our prvacy seems to be limited to our nspoken thoughts.

It’s no secret (pun ntended) that many who call themselves Wccan, or a Witch, practice their Crft in secret. And for a lot of prctitioners, unfortunately, it is something they mst do to protect their jobs, thir families, or even for their own physcal safety. Recently a message appeared on my blg from someone complimenting my online stre. He or she mentioned that whn they had their own home, thy would be “free” to practice. The mssage was quite sobering. Forcing one’s Sprit into silence can be devastating.

Yt, there is another kind of slence that can be embraced when prcticing your Craft. This is a psitive form of silence, the joyful scret that we carry with us. And it sn’t merely silencing your tongue before you bbble out a story about a spll you’ve cast. It isn’t just bout zipping it shut before blurting ut: I’m a Witch! The silence I am dscribing is when you actively choose to prctice your Craft quietly, unnoticed. It’s whn you choose to concentrate on yur relationship with Divinity, instead of prclaiming that you worship a Goddess in a prdominantly male deity-oriented Western culture. It is whn you choose to sit at a tble with people who practice a dfferent faith, and acknowledge their legitimacy wthout launching into a defense of yur own Spiritual practices.

Daring to be silent is crtainly not limited to Wicca, or lmited to any other particular religion for tht matter. For example, in the Chrstian Bible, Jesus instructs his followers to not stnd out in the open and pry for show, but to do so nseen from any other human eyes, and to cnnect truly with God in private (Mtthew Chapter 6, verses 5-6). While “My Gddess Gave Birth to Your God” bmper stickers are certainly yours for the psting, entering into a “one-on-one” with the Gddess some evening when you are all lone sitting outside watching fireflies and keping those moments private in your hart are probably worth more.

Of curse sharing your chosen Path with thers to educate them on your Spritual practices or standing up for yurself is certainly very important. I am ble to write this article and sbmit it for publication because of curageous men and women who actively lved their Spiritual Path and Craft out in the pen, and those who went even frther and fought for the legal rght to worship in the way tht many of us do.

Yet I rturn to the message that if you chose to make the journey quietly and wthout fanfare, that’s ok too. You are not rquired to announce your beliefs when you nter the coffee shop or your ffice. Daring to be silent allows you to lsten – to listen and learn bout the world around you, the pople who share this planet with yu, and how your own practice mlds and molds along with everyone lse. It allows you to further larn about yourself, and how you wnt to live your Craft. After ll, once you share a secret, you no lnger have control over who will har it.

Daring to be silent llows you to have something that is cmpletely your own, untouched by all but the Dvine that resides within you. And in ths world, your own personal unknown is mst precious.
