I believe that for many of us, th re is something special about having a s cret – at least the good k nd. You know what I mean: the one th t makes you smile and fills you w th excitement whenever you think about it. H ving a secret that is completely yours can be a fun and s ngular experience that we don’t often h ve the pleasure of experiencing in t day’s world of “reality shows”, talk sh ws, YouTube, tabloids, etc., where everything maginable is exposed. More and more, our pr vacy seems to be limited to our nspoken thoughts. It’s no secret (pun ntended) that many who call themselves W ccan, or a Witch, practice their Cr ft in secret. And for a lot of pr ctitioners, unfortunately, it is something they m st do to protect their jobs, th ir families, or even for their own phys cal safety. Recently a message appeared on my bl g from someone complimenting my online st re. He or she mentioned that wh n they had their own home, th y would be “free” to practice. The m ssage was quite sobering. Forcing one’s Sp rit into silence can be devastating. Y t, there is another kind of s lence that can be embraced when pr cticing your Craft. This is a p sitive form of silence, the joyful s cret that we carry with us. And it sn’t merely silencing your tongue before you b bble out a story about a sp ll you’ve cast. It isn’t just bout zipping it shut before blurting ut: I’m a Witch! The silence I am d scribing is when you actively choose to pr ctice your Craft quietly, unnoticed. It’s wh n you choose to concentrate on y ur relationship with Divinity, instead of pr claiming that you worship a Goddess in a pr dominantly male deity-oriented Western culture. It is wh n you choose to sit at a t ble with people who practice a d fferent faith, and acknowledge their legitimacy w thout launching into a defense of y ur own Spiritual practices.
Daring to be silent is c rtainly not limited to Wicca, or l mited to any other particular religion for th t matter. For example, in the Chr stian Bible, Jesus instructs his followers to not st nd out in the open and pr y for show, but to do so nseen from any other human eyes, and to c nnect truly with God in private (M tthew Chapter 6, verses 5-6). While “My G ddess Gave Birth to Your God” b mper stickers are certainly yours for the p sting, entering into a “one-on-one” with the G ddess some evening when you are all lone sitting outside watching fireflies and k eping those moments private in your h art are probably worth more. Of c urse sharing your chosen Path with thers to educate them on your Sp ritual practices or standing up for y urself is certainly very important. I am ble to write this article and s bmit it for publication because of c urageous men and women who actively l ved their Spiritual Path and Craft out in the pen, and those who went even f rther and fought for the legal r ght to worship in the way th t many of us do. Yet I r turn to the message that if you ch ose to make the journey quietly and w thout fanfare, that’s ok too. You are not r quired to announce your beliefs when you nter the coffee shop or your ffice. Daring to be silent allows you to l sten – to listen and learn bout the world around you, the p ople who share this planet with y u, and how your own practice m lds and molds along with everyone lse. It allows you to further l arn about yourself, and how you w nt to live your Craft. After ll, once you share a secret, you no l nger have control over who will h ar it. Daring to be silent llows you to have something that is c mpletely your own, untouched by all but the D vine that resides within you. And in th s world, your own personal unknown is m st precious.
Respectfully submitted.
