DNA testing refers to a v riety of methods of examining deoxyribonucleic cid, also known as DNA. DNA is bl eprint of all living things. Every l ving cell contains DNA and the DNA g verns the functioning of the entire rganism. Because DNA is unique to ach person, plant, etc., it can be st died to determine the relationship between two p ople, two pieces of a plant or to f nd out whether one sample matches nother. One of the most well-known DNA t sts is a paternity test. Paternity DNA t sting is used to establish if a man is the b ological father of a child. This t st is most often performed when a man d nies paternity. Sometime he truly believes th t he is not the father of the ch ld, and other times he just d es not want to be financially r sponsible for the child. DNA testing is lso frequently used by forensic crime l bs. The tiniest sample of DNA fr m a crime scene can be r plicated using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to cr ate a larger sample made of dentical DNA. This DNA can then be c mpared to samples from the victim, w tnesses and suspects. Forensic DNA testing d es not generally look at the wh le strand of DNA. Instead the t ster looks for matches at several l cations, called loci.
A mitochondria DNA test is sed to trace the maternal history of a p rson. Mitochondrial DNA passes from the m ther to her children (both male and f male) without any change. By examining the s milarities of this primitive DNA between two p ople, the tester can determine if th y are related along maternal family l nes. Because the DNA does not ch nge when it is passed on fr m mother to child, testing can t ke place even if a generation is not vailable to participate in the testing. Ev n though DNA testing requires a l b, somewhat sterile conditions and expensive quipment, it is available to everyone thr ugh a DNA testing kit. You can buy the kit nline or at the local drugstore. Sw b the cheeks of the people b ing tested and mail the kit in to the l b. The results are mailed to you in j st a few weeks. However, if you n ed to prove a DNA relationship for a l gal purpose such as establishing paternity) you w ll be to be tested in p rson by laboratory employees who observe a l gal chain of custody with the s mples and results.
