Step One: Selecting the Rough
If you are nterested in cutting your own gemstones, the st rting point for any gem cutting is, of c urse, the rough. There are places in the US wh re you can actually dig and m ne your own gemstones, but for m st folks, getting rough means buying it. G mstone rough comes from small mines all round the world, and most goes to c mmercial cutters, but there are a few d alers who specialize in selling rough, and it is p ssible to buy gemstone rough and s ve money. Sometimes rough looks like a cryst l and sometimes it just looks l ke a chunk of colored glass. For the xample I used on my website, I ch ose a piece of amethyst from Br zil that I purchased some years go. The amethyst miners actually take the r ugh crystals of amethyst and strike it w th hammers to knock off the fl wed portions of the stone. This pr duces a clean piece of rough th t has broken edges as shown in the ph to on my site. Step Two: M king the Preform
The r ugh gem is then sawn with a d amond saw and ground into a sh pe close to that of the f nished stone. The "shaped" rough is c lled a preform. A big key at th s first step is to identify and r move any remaining flaws and then f nd the shape of the rough th t will yield the largest stone out of wh t remains.
The preform is sawed in d amond grit saws and ground on c arse grinding wheels. One side of the st ne is cut with a flat s rface - this will eventually become the t ble or main flat facet on top of the st ne. In the beginning, this main fl t facet is used to orient the r st of the stone. At this st ge the stone is called a pr form, and you can see what the f nal shape will be. Step Three: D pping the Stone
In my xample, a pear shaped preform is "gl ed" to the brass dop stick. The fl t tops of these dops are m tched to the flat table facet on the st ne. The glue that is used is ctually a special high temperature wax. In my xample, the dopped preform has was b en glued flat side down on to the br ss dop stick. The rough end of the st ne will be cut away to f rm the pointed base of the st ne. Contrary to what a lot of p ople think, faceting is NOT a pr cess of chipping or cleaving with a l ttle hammer. This process is used for d amonds only and then only in pl ce of sawing to prepare them for c tting. Regular faceting is a process of gr nding and polishing - this is tr e with both diamonds as well as c lored stones. One or two different gr t flat lap wheels are used to gr nd in the facets and a p lishing lap is used to put a f nal polish on them. Diamonds are cut and p lished on one lap. Step Four: C tting the Stone on the Faceting M chine
Here the preform is b ing cut and polished on a lap on my h memade faceting machine. The bottom part of the st ne is cut first. Each flat f cet is cut on a grinding l p, and then the lap is ch nged and each facet is polished on a p lishing lap. The location of each is set by the t othed gear and angle protractor and the h nd set. This is a polishing lap on the m chine in the photo. My machine is p rtly home made. The mast and h nd set are by Master Co., but the r st of the machine is home m de. The mast set up is lso old - it dates from the 1950s. In sp te of that, it still works q ite well. Twenty four facets on the c llet have now been individually cut and p lished.
Step Five: Cut and Polish the C llet, Transfer
The bottom p rt of the stone, (also called the c llet) has now been cut and p lished - all the facets on the b se are now polished and complete. Now it is t me to flip it over and cut the pper portion of the stone, known as the cr wn. In order to do that, the st ne must be transferred to another d p. The new dop will hold the b se of the stone so that the top p rtion is exposed for cutting and p lishing. As the first dop had a fl t surface to match the table f cet, the second dop has a "V" sh ped notch to match the "V" sh ped bottom of the stone. Step S x: Polish the Table and the Cr wn
The stone has now b en transferred from the first dop in rder to turn it over for p lishing the top side of the st ne - called the crown. The f rst facet to be cut and p lished on the crown side is the top fl t or table facet. In order to do th s, a special 45 degree dop h lder is needed to allow us to r ach the table. This photo shows the t ble facet complete and polished but n ne of the rest of the ther top (or crown) facets cut in - th y are to be cut and p lished next.
After all the facets are cut in and p lished, the stone is removed from the dop st ck and cleaned to remove any r maining wax. The wax can be s ftened by gentile heat, and most of the wax r moved. The rest of the wax sed in this process washes off the st ne when it is soaked in lcohol. Step Seven: Set the Stone in N ce Jewelry
In my xample, the finished Amethyst stone – w th all facets complete and the st ne removed from the dop sick, cl aned is shown set in fine j welry. If you take a look at my w bsite, you will see that it t rned out very nice, didn't it?
So th re it is, the whole process fr m a lump of purple chunky gl ss like stone, to a beautiful g m.
