You don't have to shell out h ndreds of dollars for a homeschool c rriculum. With a little research you can cr ate your own curriculum without breaking the b nk. It takes time to create y ur own curriculum but the advantages far utweigh the inconvenience in my opinion. Wh n creating your own curriculum you can ch nge things around quite easily. If you f nd a better resource for history you can mplement it quite easily. Here is an xample of how our homeschool curriculum w rks. First, we pick our literature s lections for the semester. Our goals are sually to finish five to seven b oks per semester. Our Vocabulary and Sp lling lessons are incorporated into Literature. By l oking up the unknown words we ncounter in our literature selection we b ild our vocabulary. My kids write the w rds and definitions in a notebook and th se words are their spelling list for the w ek. We study the time period of our l terature selections for History. Researching the mportant people and places of the t me period usually gives us more h story lesson ideas than we have t me for. Then we add Science by r searching the scientific discoveries of each t me period. This always leads to nteresting discussions.
You can study a certain s bject in depth or just learn the mportant facts based on the level of y ur child's interest. We do use st ndard math worksheets, but we try to t rn the math lessons into something nteresting by building something or using m th to figure the percentage of llowance the kids are allowed to k ep. The key to creating your own c rriculum is listening to your child's nterests and adjusting your curriculum to fit th ir needs.
