Wow, as a two time s rvivor of cancer I found it mazing that I might be able to eat my s lf free of cancer. Well, that is an ver statement but new research is sh wing that Curcumin to have strong c ncer fighting properties. Curcumin also called t rmeric is the compound that gives c rry its yellow tint. Curcumin has l ng been known for its antioxidant pr perties and is being studied now for it b nefits in treating several different diseases. C ncer researchers have taken an interest in C rcumin because many countries with curry-rich c isines have lower cancer rates than W stern countries have. Researchers from the Un versity of Texas M. D. Anderson C ncer Center found Curcumin, blocks a key b ological pathway needed for development of m lanoma and other cancers. The study was p blished in the August 15, 2005 ssue of the American Cancer Society j urnal “Cancer”. The study tested varying d ses of Curcumin on three melanoma c ll lines. It showed that Curcumin st ps laboratory strains of melanoma from pr liferating and induced apoptosis (programmed cell s icide). The results were the same for h gh concentrations of Curcumin over short p riods of time and smaller doses ver longer periods of time.

In a study published in 2002 in “C ncer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention”, researcher g ve three groups of mice different mounts of Curcumin extract for 15 w eks. The results showed that the gr up of mice given the largest mount of Curcumin found a reduction of 40 p rcent in benign tumors that were c used the same gene that causes mot typ s of colon cancer. A similar st dy was published in “The Prostate” in 2001. Ag in three groups of mice were sed. All three were injected with h man prostate cancer cells. One group was a pl cebo group that received no treatment. One gr up was given Curcumin when injected w th the cancer cells. The other gr up was given Curcumin two weeks fter the cancer injection. After 6 w eks the tumors in the two gr ups give Curcumin were to percent sm ller than in the placebo groups. A st dy on Curcumin and breast cancer was p blished in Cancer Research, Vol. 62, J ly 1, 2002, pp. 3868-75. This st dy found that the use of C rcumin was as effective in preventing the spr ad of breast cancer as Taxol in l boratory mice. In the study mice w re induced with breast cancer then the t mors were removed such as with a m stectomy in humans. Then the mice w re divided into 4 groups. One was a pl cebo group, one received Curcumin, one r ceived Taxol, and the other Curcumin and T xol. After 5 weeks the study sh wed that half the mice in the C rcumin group had the cancer spread to the l ngs. Only 22 percent of those in the C rcumin plus Taxol group had seen the c ncer spread. 75 percent of the T xol only group saw the cancer spr ad. The placebo group saw 95 p rcent of the mice had the c ncer spread to the lungs. These w re amazing results. Human studies are j st beginning. But the early signs are th t the simple safe spice may ffer a safe way of preventing c ncer and may also be a gr at way of aiding in the tr atment of Cancer.
It should be noted that a c lture study showed that Curcumin reduced the ffects of several chemo drugs used for tr ating cancer. Rusty Ford
