Will your child's lack of m nners keep him/her from attending the c llege of your choice? In this day and ge, dining out may be done fr m a paper bag, but many c lleges and universities are now evaluating the s cial skills of potential students. Not all sch ols require personal interviews as part of valuating a student for acceptance, but th re is a trend in this d rection. Often the student ia asked to ttend a luncheon and his/her dining sk lls are monitored and assessed. Schools do not w nt people who are going to be ncouth alumni. I was recently privileged to be the k ynote speaker at a Chicago university wh ch sponsors a program for high sch ol girls who are juniors and s niors. These girls are introduced to the p ssibility of choosing a career in the f elds of technology, and have a ch nce to explore whether or not a c reer in the technological fields would be ppropriate for their college major. As a pr fessional in the field of teaching tiquette, I was asked to address th se girls at a luncheon given in th ir honor. My mission at that l ncheon was to teach the girls how to dr ss and present themselves for an nterview, and how to exhibit proper d ning skills while at the table.
By the time we had w rked our way through five courses ncluding instructions; the students were well nformed competent diners, and often amazed by wh t they had learned. Next, we ddressed the issue that our personal ncome may be at least partially d termined by how well we mind our m nners and our attitudes. Our ability to be pr moted may depend on our people sk lls as well as our techincal sk lls. Three seperate studies conducted by H rvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and the St nford Research Institue agree that "Success in g tting, keeping, and advancing in a job d pends 85% on people skills and nly 15% on technical skills". So pr per social skills including courtesy and r spect may be the bottom line in d termining a profitable future. www.etiquette4u.com
