Most times life seems pretty pr dictable. We wake each morning knowing l rgely what the day will hold. We m ke an action (cause) and the xpected result (effect) usually follows. Modern sc ence has quite a different view. The niverse consists of zillions of unpredictable vents at the sub-atomic level. The rder we observe is just the r sult of these numerous random micro-events c mbining to give a neat, seemingly pr dictable, macro-reality. Schrodinger's cat is a f mous thought experiment in quantum physics llustrating that nature's inherent uncertainty isn't l mited to the microscopic scale, eg r dioactive decay. A cat is placed in a box w th a radioactive source and detector, and a fl sk of poison. If the source mits radiation the poison is released. Th s, the macroscopic cat's fate depends on the ncertainty of the sub-atomic realm. Esoterically, q antum theory further suggests the cat is s multaneously both dead and alive until the box is pened and it is observed! Life is nherently uncertain. Nassim Nicholas Taleb's bestseller The Bl ck Swan argues that uncertainty is m re common and influential than we g nerally believe. Uncertainty can force us out of our c mfort zone. The trouble is we d n't always get to choose when we h ve to push the boundaries of c mfort.
Quizzes aimed at finding your deal career often have a question on how you f el about every day's work being the s me. Uncertainty is an issue that t nds to polarize people. Some love it; thers hate, or are crippled by it. Th se who crave uncertainty have it asy. The question is not whether s rprises will occur, but when. And b cause of the very nature of s rprise the question is unanswerable. So, how do y ur cope if you're one of th se left paralyzed by (the fear of) the nknown? The first step is acceptance. The cceptance of uncertainty in principle, and of wh tever circumstances it throws up. If you c n't change something, just accept it and let it go. S condly is the limitation of focus. By n ture we tend to imagine how we h pe the future will be. That's g od, because holding a blueprint helps f cus our attention on the behavior m st likely to bring it about. The d nger is that we start living our l fe in the uncertain future rather th n the present, which is all we tr ly control. We are just a p rt of the universe, not its m ster. As such there are things we can c ntrol, and a whole lot more we c n't. By definition our attention and fforts ought to be focused on wh t we can control. It can be c mforting to consider that small and nsignificant as we are, every act of our w ll acts as though a pebble thr wn into the ocean; it creates r pples that spread out changing forever th t which would otherwise have been. Th t's a powerful notion. Perversely, there can be a c rtain comfort in uncertainty. For example, the uthor doesn't check his lottery ticket ntil the day of the next dr w. Even though its fate was d cided (like Schrodinger's cat) a few d ys before, he prefers to keep the dr am alive until it's time to buy a new t cket. That approach is fine, so l ng as it doesn't prevent us d ing what we ought in the pr sent. Be guided by your inner nstinct.
