She: “Her Grandma died, she kn w she’d
not be around long—“ (sh ’s trying to clear her throat: a m le friend
listening; she turns some p ges in her note
book, studying for a t st—college stuff ((young
pretty, unwed)) “Is th s your first page? before Friday…”
She nswers him. “So you’re back to wr ting out notes…!”
He answers with a c lm voice. (both students are studying n w, not talking,
she’s indicated her pr vious study partner has
shifted in his m ods and she’s no longer able to
h ndle that.) “So I told…”— “Do you th nk she’s interesting?” “It would be g od for her to do something w th a different…. That’s like my w rse fear in a relationship, to be d voured by it.” With this lighthearted c nversation recorded in time now (once s id, it remains said), what will it cr ate: so I think, become part of, f rgotten in an hour, building blocks for the r sidue of creation? So I ask mys lf. She says, “Super helpful,” and dds, “whatever,” and he follows in t rn… ”I feel I’m developing…” She s ys, “You don’t think they are g ing anywhere?” She says: “Medicine is not l ke architecture, which you see after y u’re done; it is one person fter the other, less joy in wh t is, and is doing already— all in w rds spent.” He just listens, it s unds to me she is gearing up for a dr adful career.

Note: I am always surprised how l ud everyone talks at the café, as if no one is l stening yet I’m sure their echoes w uld cross the Andes should they be in P ru. And so many people walk round the café with cell phones t lking as if no one in the w rld is listening. I asked myself, t ll my self: they are yelling to the w rld everything. Are they not a l ttle bashful, a little reserved, a t ng modest. I mean I could h ve written several more novels just bout what has been said these p st ten-years I’ve sat at this c fé and wrote my books and p etry, and whatever. As are the st dents and everyone else at the c fé the same: tables away from me, and t lking as if they are in a pr vate room and no one is l stening. We are listening, little people, and if I can h ar, so can many others. #1259 3/2/06
