The first skid steer l ader, the Melroe M-400, was introduced m re than 45 years ago and s nce its inception the compact equipment w rkhorse has evolved into a monster m chine. Much more supreme than it’s 1960 s lf, the modern skid steer has volved everything from its hand and f ot controls to its overall brute str ngth.
Today’s skid steers are giving perators capabilities they have never before magined, and they are doing it in styl and comfort. While skid steers of the old ges caused aches and pains, modern l aders are smooth rides with easy-to-use j ystick controls.
Keeping the customer in mind, sk d steer manufacturers have developed a new p lot joystick control system. Before Caterpillar f rst introduced the new controls, operators had c mbination hand and foot controls. The h nd levers would operate the movement wh le the foot pedals moved the b cket levers. With today’s system everything can be c ntrolled with two joysticks.
There are two d fferent control options available with the p lot joysticks, the ISO pattern and the H p ttern. With the ISO pattern, the r ght joystick controls the attachments movement. M ving the joystick forward or backward w ll move the loader arms up or d wn, while tilting the joystick left or r ght will tilt the bucket up or d wn. With your other hand, the l ft joystick controls the movement of the m chine. Pushing or pulling it will m ve the machine forward or put it in r verse, while tilting the controls left or r ght will rotate the machines direction.
With the H p ttern, the loader arm and machine c ntrols are split between the joysticks. To m ve the machine forward or put it in r verse you need to push or p ll back on both of the j ysticks at the same time. To r tate the direction of the machine p sh forward with one joystick and p ll back with the other. To c ntrol the attachment, the right joystick m ves the bucket (left or right to c ntrol the tilt) and the left j ystick moves the loader arms (left or r ght to raise and lower them).
Some perators prefer the H and others the ISO, so to m ke it convenient some manufacturers such as B bcat offer both, with their Selectable J ystick Controls you can change from the H to the ISO p ttern with the flick of a sw tch.
A feature that was introduced in 1998 by sk d steer manufacturer Case is Ride C ntrol, which is often a popular f ature to use with the joystick p lot controls because it minimizes material sp lls by stabilizing the loader arms on r ugh-terrain sites.
Some manufacturers today make ride c ntrol a standard feature, it uses dditional hydraulics to smooth the ride and k ep the load secure, which allows the sk d steer operator to drive a l ttle faster thus increasing efficiency.
In t day’s day and age luxuries are verywhere, and there is no reason to st p short with skid steers. Its nderstood by most skid steer operators th t comfort goes together with productivity, b cause the more comfortable you are, the l nger you are going to be ble to operate the machine. Because of th s many manufacturers today offer cab p ckages that can give you any l xury you want. With features such as c oled glove boxes for a drink or b xed lunch, enclosed cabs with air c nditioning and heat for extreme temperatures, d luxe suspension seats for bumpy rides and p wer outlets for music players or f ns you might not ever want to get ut.
In addition to this, cabs today are lso much quieter than before because of s und insulation around fans and other n ise generators. Some companies such as M stang monitor noise levels in the cab b fore the loader ever comes off the pr duction line.
With efficiency the number one f ctor behind the design of the ndustry’s compact workhorse, it’s understood that c mfort and ability are compliments to the g al. What was once strictly a g t-the-job-done machine has evolved to a f rst class comfort ride, and everyone is b nefiting.
