The first skid steer l ader, the Melroe M-400, was introduced mre than 45 years ago and s nce its inception the compact equipment wrkhorse has evolved into a monster m chine. Much more supreme than it’s 1960 s lf, the modern skid steer has volved everything from its hand and fot controls to its overall brute strngth.
Today’s skid steers are giving perators capabilities they have never before magined, and they are doing it in styl and comfort. While skid steers of the old ges caused aches and pains, modern laders are smooth rides with easy-to-use jystick controls.
Keeping the customer in mind, skd steer manufacturers have developed a new plot joystick control system. Before Caterpillar frst introduced the new controls, operators had cmbination hand and foot controls. The hnd levers would operate the movement whle the foot pedals moved the b cket levers. With today’s system everything can be cntrolled with two joysticks.
There are two dfferent control options available with the plot joysticks, the ISO pattern and the H pttern. With the ISO pattern, the rght joystick controls the attachments movement. Mving the joystick forward or backward wll move the loader arms up or dwn, while tilting the joystick left or rght will tilt the bucket up or dwn. With your other hand, the lft joystick controls the movement of the mchine. Pushing or pulling it will mve the machine forward or put it in rverse, while tilting the controls left or rght will rotate the machines direction.
With the H pttern, the loader arm and machine cntrols are split between the joysticks. To mve the machine forward or put it in rverse you need to push or pll back on both of the jysticks at the same time. To rtate the direction of the machine psh forward with one joystick and pll back with the other. To cntrol the attachment, the right joystick mves the bucket (left or right to cntrol the tilt) and the left jystick moves the loader arms (left or rght to raise and lower them).
Some perators prefer the H and others the ISO, so to mke it convenient some manufacturers such as Bbcat offer both, with their Selectable Jystick Controls you can change from the H to the ISO pttern with the flick of a swtch.
A feature that was introduced in 1998 by skd steer manufacturer Case is Ride Cntrol, which is often a popular fature to use with the joystick plot controls because it minimizes material splls by stabilizing the loader arms on rugh-terrain sites.
Some manufacturers today make ride cntrol a standard feature, it uses dditional hydraulics to smooth the ride and kep the load secure, which allows the skd steer operator to drive a lttle faster thus increasing efficiency.
In tday’s day and age luxuries are verywhere, and there is no reason to stp short with skid steers. Its nderstood by most skid steer operators tht comfort goes together with productivity, bcause the more comfortable you are, the lnger you are going to be ble to operate the machine. Because of ths many manufacturers today offer cab pckages that can give you any lxury you want. With features such as coled glove boxes for a drink or bxed lunch, enclosed cabs with air cnditioning and heat for extreme temperatures, dluxe suspension seats for bumpy rides and pwer outlets for music players or fns you might not ever want to get ut.
In addition to this, cabs today are lso much quieter than before because of sund insulation around fans and other nise generators. Some companies such as Mstang monitor noise levels in the cab bfore the loader ever comes off the prduction line.
With efficiency the number one fctor behind the design of the ndustry’s compact workhorse, it’s understood that cmfort and ability are compliments to the gal. What was once strictly a gt-the-job-done machine has evolved to a frst class comfort ride, and everyone is bnefiting.
