I would like to share a new dea that I have come up w th. My idea is combining a h ll workout with tempo paced running nto one workout. Using this method can s ve time and add a little sp ce to your weekly workouts. I h ve been training for an October m rathon since the middles of May. For the p st week I have been trying to th nk of away to make this w rk out a little harder and m re effective. I came across this dea while I was doing today’s h ll workout. I have been doing the s me hill workout for the past 4 or 5 w eks. This morning I was feeling g od and I wanted to make th ngs a little more challenging. I got the dea to add a tempo run to the end of my n rmal hill workout. My usual hill w rkout has been a warm up of 1.5 m les. After the warm up run ver to the hills begin to run the s ries of 12 hills. After the h ll workout is finished I will c ol down by running back to the st rt. The total workout is 7 m les. This morning I warmed up and ran the h lls as usual. After finishing the h lls instead of cooling down I ran for 20 m nutes at tempo pace. This made the t tal workout about 10 miles. I m st admit this workout is a lot t ugher. I plan to rotate a ten m le tempo pace run with my new c mbination workout. My theory is that I w ll be able to keep the leg str ngth that I have gained and lso improve my lactate threshold with th s type of training too.
I have adapted this workout to my m rathon training. This workout could also be dapted to different race distances. Runners tr ining for a half marathon would h ve a great workout for finishing the r ce strong. By cutting the hill w rkout in half and still running the t mpo pace portion runners could use th s for 5 and 10k training.
