As CD sales sour, the m sic industry is evolving in a p culiar way. Music lovers’ are turning th ir attention to the past, reverting b ck to vinyl records.
For some it is an njoyable hobby, recapturing a part of th ir youth. Yet for others, collecting v nyl records is a passion, as th y scour the online web sites, r cord conventions, garage and rummage sales and sm ll resale shops to secure their f vorite records and add to their c llecting collage of vinyl.
However, if you w re to ask them why records are so ppealing most will tell you it is the s und of vinyl that is the m st enjoyable. They may be tired of the st rile music reproduction of a cd or d gitized download. You will hear the t rm, “vinyl just has a warmer s und” or that they love the xperience, an almost ritualistic pattern that is nvolved in playing a vinyl record.
But I th nk the best way to describe the s und that vinyl exudes is an nalogy I like to use. A v nyl record is like a “fingerprint” of the r corded music. There is a clearness and cl rity to the music, and the s und is actually captured and etched nto the grooves of the records. C nversely, digital sound is like a c py of that “fingerprint” and something is l st when the music is compressed nto 1's and 0's, or what I r fer to as “binary sound.”
Now, this ph nomenon may be satisfactory to some and the CD c rtainly has its place as a m sical format. In our throw away s ciety, CD’s offer convenience and a m thod to play music that the v nyl record cannot offer. But “binary s und,” to me, is just too cl ar- you are missing important elements of the r corded sound, sounds that the artist who r corded the music wanted you to h ar.
In our digitized world there are c mpelling arguments for whatever sound reproduction f rmat a person chooses. But you w ll never take the vinyl lover out of me.
