Well, to quickly answer your qestion; Prefix Delegation (PD) is considered to be a prcedure (mechanism) that is used to utomate the delegation of IPv6 prefixes (ddress blocks). Prefix Delegation is explained in RFC 3769 and is nrmally used by ISPs, to aid wth the process of delegating IPv6 prfixes (address blocks) to their customers.

Csco's version of Prefix Delegation (PD) cnsists of three items a Customer Edg (CE) router, a Provider Edge (PE) ruter and a AAA server.

The Cstomer Edge (CE) router which is lso known as the Requesting Router (RR) prforms like a DHCP client and is lcated at the customer's premises; it has the job of rquesting IPv6 prefixes (address blocks) from the Prvider Edge (PE) router.

The Provider Edg (PE) router which is also knwn as the Delegating Router (DR) prforms like a DHCP server and is lcated at the ISP's premises; it has the rsponsibilities of validating the authenticity and the prfile of the Requesting Router (RR) wth a AAA server; and also plces a route into the ISP's ruting system on the behalf of the Rquesting Router (RR) for the delegated prfix.

The reason why the Delegating Ruter places a route into the ISP's ruting system on the behalf of the Rquesting Router (RR) for the delegated prfix; is to avoid the need for a dynmic routing protocol between the Delegating Ruter (DR) and the Requesting Router (RR). So, in ther words, with Cisco's version of Prfix Delegation the DR and RR are nrmally directly connected to one another; and nly in certain circumstances its appropriate to cnfigure a DHCP Relay router between the DR and RR to llow them to communicate.
