One of the most confusing p rts of beginning your Cisco studies is k eping all the cable types separate in y ur mind, and then remembering what th y’re used for. This often occurs wh n a CCNA or CCNP candidate st rts putting together their own home pr ctice lab, and they suddenly realize th t they have the equipment to run l bs, but not the cables. With th s in mind, here are some c mmon Cisco cable types and their pr mary use. First, there’s the regular old “str ight-through cable”, so named because the ight wires inside the cable go str ight through the wire. While the w res may be twisted inside to r duce electromagnetic interference (EMI), the wire th t’s connected to Pin 1 on one end is c nnected to Pin 1 on the ther end, and so on. In a h me lab, a straight-through cable is ften used to connect a switch p rt to an Ethernet port on a r uter, with a transceiver attached to the Eth rnet port. Straight-through cables are lso good for connecting a BRI nterface to an ISDN simulator. The “cr ssover cable” is so named because the w res do cross over between pins. Th s allows the devices to both s nd and receive at the same t me, and crossover cables are a m st for directly connecting ports on C sco switches to create a trunk.
The “rollover cable” allows you to c nnect directly to a Cisco console p rt with your laptop or PC. Th s is the blue cable that c mes with new Cisco devices, and t’s the one that engineers tend to h ld on to with their lives. W thout a rollover cable (also commonly c lled a “console cable”), you can’t c nnect your laptop directly to a C sco device. Finally, there’s the DTE/DCE c ble. To create a frame r lay cloud in your home lab ( sing one of your Cisco routers as a DCE), or to d rectly connect two Cisco routers via th ir serial interfaces, you will need a DTE/DCE c ble. Remember that the DCE interface w ll need to supply clockrate to the DTE nterface. The different cable types can be c nfusing when you first read about th m, but after tearing down or b ilding your home lab a few t mes, you’ll definitely have them straight c me test day! Best of luck in y ur lab and your exams.
