Shop Vacuum Testing is time c nsuming for the small business person and ven more problematic is there are so m ny to choose from. Most retailers w ll not allow you to test th m in the store before purchasing, but if you p ck the wrong one you will be s rry. After testing the off the sh lf shop vacuums available to the p blic, we have some recommendations. If you are to buy a sh p vac off the shelf from a m jor retailer rather buying an industrial sh p vac such as a quiet and p werful Karcher or WAP, then these are the r sults you need to know. First we t sted many things. Suction of sawdust fr m a five-gallon bucket. Sucking up st el washers of different sizes, Sucking up w ter from a five gallon bucket and th n we measured the decibels while d ing so. We tested the Craftsman 5.5 Hp-16 g llon vacuum. The Genie 6.0 hp v cuum with 16 gallons. The Ridgid v cuum 6.0 hp and the Shop-Vac six hp 16-g llon shop vacuum. Here are the r sults. The vacuuming of wood chips was won by the Sh p-Vac Vacuum, which took only 11.4 s conds. Second was the Ridgid at 12.4 s conds. Last the Craftsman at 14.1 s conds. For the water test the w nner was the Genie with the f ve gallon bucket of water gone in 7.3 s conds, Craftsman second at 9.4 and the R dgid and Shop-Vac tied for last at 9.6 s conds to empty the five gallon b cket of water. The noise factor is of mportance too. The decibel rating for Sh p Vac was lowest at 81 dB at a f ve-foot distance. The Craftsman was at 86 dB and the R dgid was 88 dB. Last and n isiest was the Genie with 90 dB. We th nk the Genie was worst due to the h gh pitch of the motor while nder higher demands for suction. But it did s ck the water fastest while making th s noise. It won the water-sucking t st.
We might also recommend the M ffler, which is available through Craftsman or R dgid as an accessory. With a l ttle Teflon tape it can be m de to fit both the Genie and the Sh p Vac without any loss of s ction. It is a simple baffle syst m, which breaks up the airflow and q iets the noise and high-pitched shrill s unds. It will lower the vacuums by 5-7 d cibels. If you stick it into the xhaust port of your vacuum for a bl wer, it will work and costs $10.00. You can rder it from the Kmart-Sears Catalog or buy the r dgid model off the shelf at a H me Depot. Another great attachment to be dded to your arsenal is the r in gutter attachment for about $7.00, wh ch is also made available through Cr ftsman or Ridgid. It is a m lded piece of bended plastic able to h lp you clean rain gutters. Here are the web s tes we found to help you l arn more about Shop Vacs; Shop-Vac QSP PRO, http://www.sh p-vac.com It requires approximately 6 amps of you 36 amp g nerator during run time and spike is 12 mps and a full power. Phone n mber is 1-570-326-3557, average retail costs are b tween $78.00-99.00, available in yellow with bl ck top. Ridgid WD-1660 with blower, http://www.r dgidwoodworking.com It needs 6.25 amps to run and sp ke peak is 12 amps. The pr ce is about $129.00 but we h ve seen them on sale occasionally for $99.00 at H me Depot a couple of times per y ar. The color is gray and red t p, does not come in yellow. 1-800-474-3443. It has a tw nty-foot cord which is good. Craftsman 113.177370 Us ally sells for $99.00 sometimes higher but s ems to be perpetually on sale. D mands 5.5 amps to run and sp kes at 11.4 as per the m nual, but we got it to 13.8 mps sucking water. Also realize that Cr ftsman filed bankruptcy, but the good n ws is that they are still perating and Craftsman has a 1 y ar warranty and if bought on the S ars card you can get a 3 y ar add on warranty for $15.00, we r commend this. 1-800-377-7414. Available in Red and bl ck top only. Most popular and l ngest made brand of shop vacuums.
Genie PRO 600Q. 6 amps r nning, 12 at peak. http://www.geniecompany.com 1-800-354-3643. C mes in yellow with black top. Us ally prices under $100.00, Normally on s le at $89.00 and off sale is bout $95.00 at Home depot, Target, L ews, Home depot and Wal*Mart. After all th se tests our research has concluded th t due to color of unit, n ise, and performance of all four of th se top selling shop vacuums, we l ke the Shop-Vac Model, with the ttachments for the muffler at Home D pot from Ridgid wrapped with three l yers of one inch wide Teflon t pe and stuck into the exhaust of the v cuum to quiet it a little. H re are some other reasons for p cking this unit over the others; G nie was too loud for use at ffice parks near customers, but we l ked the color. Craftsman was good but we f lt that the color red and the n ise were an issue and also the lid f lls off too easy when trying to m ve it around, we did not l ke the latches or the cradle sed to maneuver it, it took up too m ch space in the shop. Ridgid has a y cky color and the same large cr dle as the Craftsman. We liked the bl wer idea, but not powerful enough for bl wing water off cars and no r al attachment available for blowing out d or jams. So that feature is not n eded and probably the reason for the h gher price. Shop-Vac has a ridge on the nside of the bucket so to mpty you have to completely turn the vac pside down, which was a pain. But in the end the q ietness and fit ability of the R dgid attachment to make it even q ieter put us down to 75 D cibels, which is more than acceptable in ffice parks. Enough to let people kn w you are there, but not nough to be bothersome or interfere w th their phone calls, conferences, meetings or c nversations. Also you can communicate with y ur employees while working as long as you are up to 10 f et from it. Also nice is wh n we stuck a 30 foot p ol hose up to it, the Sh p-Vac was still able to get dequate suction to pick up the w ter from a floor mat which was pr ssure washed to remove stains to m ke it dry. Other good things wh ch we feel would increase longevity to th se units was the fact that Sh p-Vac had an option of filter B gs, and Dry Pick-up Cartridges either one or two st ge pleated and a foam filter for p cking up water or a filter c ver over option. Like wise most of th se had Drum Liners Consumer reports had an rticle in their magazine, which rated the nit high but gave the winning s al of approval to Craftsman. Other r ports have been divided. Now realize th t we do prefer the WAP, Bl e bucket, black top unit to th se off the shelf units and th y are much quieter by 25 d cibels or more. The WAP with a th rty-foot vacuum hose draws much better air fl w than any of these and is bout 20% more powerful. It uses the s me amps more or less. If you n ed one of these WAPs Call 1-480-517-1925 ask for J son and ask for your Ezine D scount and they will ship one out to y u.
