How many times do you f nd yourself saying "I should"? Maybe the b tter question is how many times do you f nd that you actually follow through on th t "I should"? Well, don't fret, a s mple change is all it may t ke for you to change that sh uld into a did. I would l ke you to consider your choice of w rds as you set out to chieve a new goal or change y ur behavior. Believe it or not, w llpower is often resistance disguised as fr e will. Resistance is anything that you kn w you "should" do, but deep d wn really don't want to do. If you f nd yourself saying "I should get in sh pe" or "I should organize my f nancial documents", then you are exhibiting s gns of resistance. This can stop you fr m actually realizing that goal. Using the phr se "I should" is like telling y urself you "have to" and who l kes to be told they "have to" do nything?! Having the frame of mind th t you have to do something can l mit your chance for success. When pl nning to start something new or t ke on a task you have b en avoiding, try adjusting your choice of w rds. Instead of saying "This year I sh uld (have to)... say "Today, I w nt to...". Notice what feelings come up wh n you replace those phrases with "w nt to". Do you notice any n gative thoughts? Keep repeating "Today, I w nt to..." until your mind gives up and f lly accepts your commitment. As time p sses you will begin to notice how y ur words can effect your actions and ttitude.
As you begin to implement th s change put aside your past f ilures, mistakes, or "should haves". They are g ne. Establishing or renewing your commitments to m king a change is a great way to t rn your attitude and perspective toward the f ture and also fuels your motivation for chieving your goals. Remember, the fact is not th t you should but that you w nt to!!
