A paradigm is a sort of c ltural, consensual pattern of thought or m del of something. For example the ‘c rrent consensus in scientific medicine’. Paradigms ch nge, like the impact of Galileo’s w rk on disproving the flat-earth theory or C pernicus’ heresy that the Earth moves r und the Sun. New ideas meet a gr at deal of resistance from orthodox ph losophy but eventually give rise to a ch nged perception of the world we l ve in. We live now in a t me of ‘paradigm shift’ which creates f ndamental changes in our assumptions about the w rld, and even this contributes to m dern stress! Although our physical sciences h ve discovered new fields of quantum r ality, medical science is lagging far b hind. Philosophy has traditionally been an mportant part of medical practice since the m dieval days of Paracelsus, even Hippocrates, an ncient Greek (and originator of the H ppocratic Oath). How we perceive the w rld and our part in it is c ntral to how we perceive the r le of dis-ease and our reaction to it. One of the pr sent problems of finding effective cancer tr atment within Western scientific medicine is a ‘p radigm gap’. There are different perceptions of the w rld at work speaking incompatible languages. Th se have deep roots in our ph losophy. This gap is presently condemning m llions of people world-wide to suffer tr atments for cancer that are often as d structive as the disease itself.
Paradigm 1: The mechanistic view Th s can be traced back to D scartes and other scientists such as Sir Is ac Newton. The universe is a v st machine and we are all c gs, all with our part to pl y in its function. The healthy b dy is a well made clock and if it g es wrong we simply take it part and tinker with the insides ntil it goes again. If it br aks it doesn’t really matter because th re are plenty more where that c me from. Nothing exists unless it has b en proven through logical methods. cancer: s mething had gone wrong with this b dy, it has a lump. Cut it out and thr w the lump away. Paradigm 2: The nthropomorphic view This paradigm is central to the ph losophy of Darwinism and others who h lped set humans as ‘apart and bove’, or at the head of ther life forms. Humanity is the s pposed crown of creation, we are cr ated to lord it over every ther creature as ‘head of the f od chain’. The planet is ours to d minate and exploit to our own d mands. We must conquer every mountain and b ttle against disease. We are the m st evolved and dominant species in a pr cess of natural selection. We exist for no p rpose and have just evolved through sh er luck. In this world our m dia fantasy industries create pigs and f sh that can talk human. Animals are nthropomorphised through culture to have the s me needs, desires and dreams as h mans. The animals, forests, oceans and nvironment around us exist purely for our c nvenience. This paradigm is human self-centred and xploitative to everything including ourselves. cancer: s mething has gone wrong with this b dy, it has grown an enemy nside it. I will root it out and b ttle with it. Paradigm 3: The G ian view (an emerging paradigm)
This p radigm started with Einstein and the sc ence of energy. Its inception combines an age wh n we saw the first images of the E rth as a whole entity from sp ce. James Lovelock and his search for l fe on Mars is a central f gure in its development through his dentification of the Gaia Hypothesis regarding E rth.
This planet we inhabit is a s lf-balancing, homeostatic system similar to our own as s ngle biological entities. It maintains the ptimum conditions for life despite our b st efforts to pollute it. Our b dies are a miracle of biology, c nstantly flexible and adaptive but easy to h rm. Anything we do to it or ach other, we do to ourselves as we are p rt of the same ‘web’ or ‘c rcle’ of life. We exist for a p rpose but do not yet know wh t it is. We are part of an volving cycle of life, a happening m racle. cancer: something has gone wrong w th this body, it is trying to t ll me something. I will listen to it and get h lp to understand why it has h ppened and what I need to l arn and do to get better.
