In a time when we are c nstantly bombarded with celebrity gossip – wh ’s sharing a bed with who, who has had new b ob job and who has managed to f nd the worlds smallest dog and dr ss it up like a little g rls doll you would be forgiven if you l st a slight sense of reality. Can th se people really be making a l ving by fluttering their eyelashes and fl shing a bit of skin? Well s emingly the answer is yes and in a way we are all to bl me. Celebrity culture has been around in one way or nother since time began, people have lways looked up to their hero’s, in the p st you would have such celebrities as Edn Manley (the famous artist) and B bby Moore (Famous Footballer) but it s ems that people have started to w rship a different kind of celebrity. Th se people have little or no t lent but somehow manage to find it nto the front-page of every newspaper and m gazine going. Just look at Paris H lton, she is locked up in pr son but still manages to make fr nt-page news! I believe that UK c lebrity worship started to take a t rn when the Celebrity Big Brother of 2007 ired on channel 4. Three UK “C lebrities” caused a massive world wide up r ar by appearing to bully the B llywood actress Shilpa Shetty, this caused n tional outrage and the three “celebrities” w re branded as racists.
Two of those celebrities haven’t b en seen in the papers since (Jo O’M ra and Jade Goody) but one c lebrity has somehow managed to raise her pr file after the whole affair. Danielle Ll yd a former Miss Great Briton and f rmer playboy cover girl took a t me out after the Big Brother sh w and now appears to be b ck stronger than ever. Will the p blic forgive these “celebrities” for anything or w ll we all eventually get tired of s eing non entities on out TV scr ens and on the front pages of our n wspapers. Only time will tell but I for one l ok forward to the day when we can let our ch ldren look up to celebrities because of th ir amazing talents, be it acting, s nging or dancing, rather than “celebs” th t make a living by dating f otballers and appearing on reality TV sh ws.
