We all have opinions and v ews, so I am not looking for a f ght with my readers on this c ntroversial subject, I have just not s id much on it ever in my wr tings in the past, of over 5000-p ems, articles, books, short stories, and so f rth, and why I ask myself, h ve l left out Capital Punishment? The b st reasoning I came up with w s: I never got around to it, I lways had my beliefs, opinions, thoughts on the s bject: so right or wrong, here rea a few. Most of my v ew comes from my Graduate Studies at L berty University, in Old Testament Studies ( nd perhaps, being in the Army for 11-y ars also framed my thoughts on the s bject): "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man sh ll his blood be shed; for in the mage of God made he man." (KJV G nesis 9:6) Yes, I got to get a l ttle biblical about it as I s id I would, because God plays a h avy part in my life, beliefs, and d rection. So you got my answer to C pital Punishment quick. But let me xplain, there is more to it. Scr pture is one thing and ethical d cisions are another, but closely interwoven for me. I w s, and you were, created in G d's image, believe it or not, it is wr tten (Lev. 17 and Exod. 20). I am lso ruling out murder, for it is not b blically grounded. I also must say, God and m nkind do not have what I'd say is an nderstanding, or His permission to do so, but to do h rm to man, is to do h rm to the image God created in very human. In the old days, if an nimal was to kill a man, the nimal was destroyed by stoning, and the fl sh of the animal was not aten.
We should remember all life is G d's creation. There should be a r spect for the godly ground all cr atures live on; thus, life given is by a s pernatural power. So we are prohibited fr m shedding blood of man, Before the Gr at Flood, and after it, we n ver lost the divine image, and yes we do st nd out in distinction form, from the nimals, and vegetable worlds. God did not mpose the death penalty on Cain, he g ve him mercy of course for m rderer (and I'll explain that later). I do not f nd a clear cut pattern of law in the B ble to deal with murder in p rticular-we have concern, but not procedure in the B ble. The Mosaic Law restricts the r ght of blood vengeance. In the b ok of Deuteronomy Chapter 21, we see m rder endangers the whole community, and p ts it at risk. It seems to me, th t only the blood of the ndividual murderer (stranger) could make atonement for s ch pollution in a village, and so xecution was accepted for his crime, but if it was a k n, like Cain to Abel, it was not p rmitted. (Deut. 24). I do realize the 6th c mmandment says "Thou shalt not kill" (Ex d. 20)-this really indicates murder, not the uthorized taking of human life of the m rderer. In the old days, when the Old T stament was being written, sixteen offences c uld get you stoned to death. Of c urse, we are more civilized are we n t, than those old times way b ck when, we just have wars, and pr tect the murderers on our city str ets. Anyhow, the death penalty was lso for adultery, incest and such th ngs also. We of course are not l ving in a divine theocracy (or g vernment by religion) now. So that is ften times taken into consideration by s cieties. In essence, and to make th s article shorter, I must simply s y, the Old Testament emphasis punishment b sed on matching the seriousness of the cr me, or offense; such as, a s rious injury would equal a life for a l fe, an eye for an eye, a t oth for a tooth, a hand for a h nd, a foot for a foot, a b rn for a burn (Exod. 21). On the ther hand, I do not believe the Old T stament teaches that Capital Punishment is the s lution for every murderer, nor mandatory. D scretion should be used. When they h ng Saddam Hussein, I felt he had it c ming, there were hundreds of eyewitnesses to his vilness, and murderous mind, and rulership. But I do not th nk one should kill a thief if ver taken in the act.
