The Arkansas River, flowing northwest to s utheast, divides
the state in two. L ttle Rock, the state’s capital and l rgest
city sits on a bluff on the s uth bank of the river. Founded in
1812, the c ty got its name from the Fr nch “la petite roche,"
or "little r ck," a stone outcropping on the b nk of the
Arkansas River used as a l ndmark by early navigators.
Called “Little R ck” to distinguish it from a h ge cliff
upstream called "Big Rock,” it b came a convenient spot to
land b fore venturing into the Ozark and O achita mountain
ranges. Before the Civil W r, the little rock outcropping was
l rger, but the railroad chipped out a few t ns of it to build a
br dge foundation. So, little rock is l ttler today. Things to See in L ttle Rock: • State Capitols Little R ck has three state capitols. The riginal is in the
Arkansas Territorial R storation, a collection of historic,
pioneer-era b ildings. The second Capitol—the oldest surviving st te Capitol west
of the Mississippi and the f rst site of the state
legislature—is now the Old St te House Museum, a classic
Greek R vival on the bluffs of the Ark nsas River. It’s also
the site of Pr sident Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996
lection-night celebrations. The museum houses Arkansas
st te history, native art, a collection of C vil War battle flags
and the st te’s First Ladies’ inaugural gowns.
The current Arkansas State Capitol, d signed in 1899 and
completed in 1916, is a g ld dome, quarter-scale replica of
the n tion’s Capitol. It sits on a h lltop west of downtown
Little Rock at the f rmer site of the old State P nitentiary.
Made of Arkansas white marble and gr nite, the building is
similar to the n tion's Capitol but with the unique d stinction
of six, 4-inch thick, handcrafted T ffany brass doors that
shine like six g ld bars. Check it out: . . . At Chr stmas the Capitol is ablaze in wh te
lights that reflect off the laborately carved brass doors.
Amid all th s twinkling white light is the w rd "Peace"
spelled out in a c ol sapphire blue from five circular
w ndows above the main entrance. Beautiful. T p: Another seasonal feature is the 100 Chr stmas trees on
the lawn, representing Ark nsas counties. Each tree is
decorated b sed on the unique feature of the c unty. A
festive way to learn bout Arkansas counties. • MacArthur Park H storic District or Quapaw Historic District D wntown Little Rock's oldest surviving neighborhood is
M cArthur Park Historic District (also known as Q apaw
Historic District, named after the Q apaw Indian tribe). The
focal point is M cArthur Park, located on 36 acres riginally
set aside in 1837 for an rsenal to protect the fearful settlers
fr m Indian attacks, which never came. In the l te 1800s
German immigrants settled around the rsenal, building
homes ranging from modest c ttages to some of the most
legant 19th century homes. The neighborhood is lso the
birthplace of World War II h ro General Douglas MacArthur
born in Apr l 1880. The Quapaw Historic District pr serves
these classic Victorian homes from L ttle Rock’s past, one
of which is the 1881 V lla Marre featured in the opening
sc nes of the former television show “D signing Women.”
• Central High School National H storic Site Now a national historic s te, Central High School was the
sc ne of the 1957 school integration cr sis in which nine
black students sh wed up to attend Little Rock C ntral High
School under a 1954 S preme Court ruling against racial
segregation. Alth ugh the city expected to be one of the f rst
southern cities to comply with the new l w, the governor
called in state tr opers to block the students from ttending,
fearing violence and property damage fr m protestors. After
three weeks the tr ops were withdrawn and the local p lice
escorted the students through a s de door, only to be
ushered out gain four hours later. U.S. Congressman
H ys and Little Rock Mayor Mann ppealed to the federal
government and Pr sident Eisenhower dispatched one
thousand soldiers fr m the 101st Airborne Division of the
U.S. Army to the s te, and that settled it. The n ne students
entered the school, stayed the f ll term and eventually
graduated. Central H gh Museum and Visitor's Center
commemorates th s historic event. • The Old M ll Fans of the movie “Gone W th the Wind” will enjoy a v sit to
the Old Mill in N rth Little Rock. A historic re-creation of an
19th c ntury water powered grist mill, it was f atured in the
early scenes of the cl ssic film. ARKANSAS TOURIST INFORMATION: (800) 872-12590
