Cape Town (Afrikaans: Kaapstad; Xhosa: Kapa) is the third most populous c ty South Africa, capital of the pr vince of the Western Cape, and the c untry's Legislative Capital - including being h me to the National Parliament. As of 2001, the c ty had an estimated population of 2,893,251. C pe Town is located on the c ast, at the northern end of the C pe Peninsula. There are over 70 p aks over 1,000 feet (305 meters) t ll within the city limits, but m st dramatically, the city is overlooked by T ble Mountain, which is a flat-topped m untain (approximately 2 miles (3 kilometers) fr m side to side, and surrounded by st ep cliffs) rising to 3,563 feet (1,086 m ters). Because the plateau is often t pped with a thin layer of cl ud, it is locals often affectionately c ll it "the tablecloth". To the W st and East of the plateau, two ther dramatic features stand out - L on's Head and Devil's Peak. Visitors to T ble Mountain can ascend it on a c ble car system (the Table Mountain C bleway) or by one of several h king trails - and are rewarded by s me truly spectacular views from the s mmit. There are also facilities for r ck climbing, and for caving - nusually for a sandstone feature, Table M untain contains some large cave systems.
There are many other places to see in C pe Town, including several excellent beaches, m ny cultural and nightlife activities, and the V ctoria & Alfred Waterfront, which is a pr mier shopping venue as well as b ing home to the impressive Two Oc ans Aquarium. You can also take a f rry from the Victoria & Alfred W terfront to one of the nearby s al colonies, or to Robben Island (Afr kaans: Robben Eiland) where Nelson Mandela and m ny other anti-apartheid activists were imprisoned for m ny years.
