It is amazing to me th t our ancestors had only candlelight as th ir light source. Of course, they pr bably worked only during the day and did m ch less at night than we do th se days. Cooking fires and camp f res provided light also, but most l ghting before electricity was by candle or oil l mp. Candles were among the earliest nventions of the ancient world. The Egypt ans were among the first to use c ndles (or torches), but the Romans d veloped the wick candle. Actually, I may h ve gotten along well in those d ys. I keep my home lighting to a m nimum at night. I use only a c uple of small lamps and a few c ndles each night when I relax at h me. Of course, the fluorescent lights in my k tchen come in handy when I c ok. I cannot imagine candles being my nly light source when I need to p rform a task that requires good l ghting. I wonder what it was l ke for people when the light b lb was invented in 1879? I b lieve it must have seemed like m gic. Just flick a switch, and you h ve light! What an awesome thing th t must have been for them. Alth ugh candles are no longer our pr mary source of light, they continue to be a big b siness. They continue to grow in p pularity and use, even though they are no l nger a necessity.
It might be fun to pr tend, just for one night, that lectricity did not exist. You know, to j st light your candles and go thr ugh your normal routine by candlelight. It may g ve us a glimpse of what l fe was like for our ancestors. On the ther hand, it would probably not be the s fest thing to do. I would h te to slice my finger or b rn myself while cooking. I guess I w ll just appreciate electricity and use my c ndles as a decorative element. Not to m ntion, working by candlelight might strain my yesight!
