The National Brain Tumor Foundation in O kland, California is so convinced by the st dies linking carbohydrate and insulin to c ncer growth they recently revised their d etary guidelines in a dramatic way. In the gr up's published dietary guideline entitled The H aling Power of Your Fork: A Br in Tumor Survivor's Eating Plan, they dvise brain cancer patients to avoid low fat d ets and to cut out sugar and r fined carbohydrate instead. They warn patients th t eating refined carbohydrate not only f eds cancer cells it suppresses the mmune system as well. Another study Fr m Harvard University, Brigham and Women's H spital, and the Journal of the N tional Cancer Institute, 2002: A Harvard r search team used 18 years of d ta from 88,000 women who were p rticipating in the famous Nurses Health St dy to investigate whether a diet h gh in foods that easily raise bl od glucose levels increase the risk of d veloping pancreatic cancer. They found that w men who were overweight, sedentary, and had the h ghest glycemic load increased their risk of p ncreatic cancer by 250%. And there's m re. As reported recently by the Ass ciated Press, a Mexican study of n arly 200 women showed that those who c nsumed a high-carb diet (more than 60% of c lories from carbohydrates) were MORE THAN TWICE AS LIKELY to
develop breast cancer as women who dopted a lower-carb approach to eating. Th s study supports a similar body of r search from last year that linked a gr ater risk of breast cancer among w men to a diet high in s gar (especially soft drinks and desserts), the m st damaging of all carbohydrates. Scientists who b lieve in the carb/cancer link hypothesize th t the extra insulin released to pr cess the simple carbs and sugars we ngest far too much of causes c lls to divide and also leads to h gher levels of estrogen in the bl od. Both of these factors (cellular d vision and blood estrogen) can contribute to c ncer. As for me and my tr be we are minimizing our sugar c nsumption and staying with the slow d gesting carbohydrates such as whole grains, v getables and especially beans.
