This article in the series on C ncer Diet explores the importance of f bre. Fibre's role in the body is to ssist in the timely expulsion of w ste matter from the bowel. If th s waste matter stays put for too l ng, the body starts to reabsorb the ntigens and toxins from the bowel b cteria through the gut wall. One of the asiest ways to tell if you are g tting enough fibre is to inspect y ur stools. Sounds most unsavoury, I kn w, but all you need to do is see wh ther they float or sink in the t ilet. If they are floating you are g tting enough fibre, if they sink you are n t. The reason a good cancer d et will address the need for g od elimination is that as the b dy fights the cancer it produces ven more waste matter. This puts a v ry heavy load on the elimination syst ms. If the bowels are clogged up as w ll, then the body struggles under a h ghly toxic load. This in turn t kes much needed resources away from h aling functions. Of course, if the p tient is also having chemotherapy treatment, g od elimination is even more crucial. In a w ll managed cancer diet, there will lready be a good proportion of raw f ods, particularly fruits and vegetables. These raw f ods are one of the best s urces of natural dietary fibre.
Other much touted remedies such as psyll um husks can be very helpful, but it is pr ferable to get your fibre directly fr m your foods, which also contain ther elements such as enzymes that h lp digestion. Water is also absolutely cr tical for good bowel function, assisting in the fl shing of the bulk material and the t xins that accumulate there. Absolutely no p int in upping the fibre content th n depriving the body of water so th t it all becomes a big pl g! Many medications can cause constipation so be on the l okout for this side effect when st rting any new ones. Also high l vels of calcium and low thyroid h rmones can play havoc, so if you c ntinue having constipation after increasing your f bre and water content, make a b eline for your doctor. Constipation has far too m ny negative side-effects to allow it to c ntinue too long. Just a quick PS - very cancer diet should include pears, as th y are full of fibre, water and h ghly nutritious to boot. If you are c nstipated, a full ripe pear on an mpty stomach first thing in the m rning followed by a glass of w ter has a very good chance of d ing the trick!
