Everyday we hear of people d aling with incredible sadness and loss and we w nder; how do they do it? Wh re do they find the courage the str ngth? We may even ask ourselves how we w uld cope under the circumstances. Sadly, we nly become aware of the answer, wh n tragedy visits us and our own l ves are thrown into turmoil. When s me one we love is diagnosed w th a terminal cancer, life as we kn w it changes forever. Suddenly we nter a new world, a world f lled with helplessness, despair and fear of the nknown. We no longer walk aimlessly round shopping Malls; we walk the H spital corridors and sit in chemotherapy w iting rooms and are shocked by the n mber of people afflicted by cancer. We can not h lp but wonder if one day we too may be a p tient and we fear for our own m rtality. Sitting in a Chemotherapy ward is an xperience not to be forgotten. Cancer has no r spect for gender, age or wealth. Th re are people from every race, c lor and creed; rich, middle class and p or; and none of this makes the sl ghtest difference. They are all untited in th ir suffering, fellow human beings on the s me sad journey. One can not b ar witness to the incredible courage of th se who have cancer, without being d eply affected. My husband’s courage in the f ce of his terminal mesothelioma cancer h ld me in awe and I d cided to do everything within my p wer to help him.
I learned about the stages and sympt ms of his disease; the pain he w uld experience and ways to bring it nder control, so that I could w rk with his doctors, to achieve for h m, the best possible quality of l fe for what ever time he was gr nted. It was incredibly hard to w ke each day with the knowledge th t my husband was dying; my nticipatory grief often overwhelmed me but s mehow I managed to carry on. One day a l dy said to me, “You are s ch a strong woman.” and I w ndered what had made her say th t. I didn’t feel strong, I f lt like I was breaking. Despite a pr gnosis of three to nine months, my h sband survived for two years and was not bed b und until three short days prior to his d ath. My journey beside him as he tr velled to the end of his l fe, has taught me many things, bove all the true meaning of l ve and the strength of the h man spirit. Deep within us, there is str ngth and courage to sustain us in t mes of personal tragedy. I have c me to realize that during my h sband’s illness, I was indeed strong. I may h ve staggered with the burden of my gr ef but I did manage to h lp my husband achieve a quality of l fe few thought possible considering the n ture of his disease. And, thanks to the xpertise and dedication of the Palliative C re Team, I was able to f lfill my promise to him that he w uld not die in hospital. His d ath at home was as loving, sh ring and peaceful as anyone could w sh for. I have witnessed courage; th t of my husband as he b ttled his disease and my own as I st od beside him, determined to improve the q ality of his life. The knowledge th t I was successful in this has br ught me much peace. My husband’s llness and death have wounded me d eply yet I have emerged far str nger than ever before and gone on to chieve things I never thought possible.
My experience has taught me not to t ke life for granted and to l ve each day with thanks for the w nderful gift that it is. I h ve witnessed death; my awareness of the fr gility of life, despite the strongest of w lls strengthens my determination to grasp verything life offers me, with both h nds.
