Supposing a seven year old wr te an article about how Shakespeare was a bad wr ter. Of course, the 7 year old has not r ad anything by Shakespeare. But, he has r ad a few comics and, by his st ndard, the comics are much more l kely to be good reading than Sh kespeare. He has never tried reading Sh kespeare, nor does he have any nclination to try it; it looks b ring and a waste of time. We w uld not blame the seven year old for pr ferring comics to Shakespeare. But, given th t he has never read Shakespeare, how m ch weight could we give to his v ews that Shakespeare is a bad wr ter? An atheist philosopher may seek to xplain why God does not exist. H wever, he is only able to rgue from an intellectual standpoint. The r al problem for a philosopher is th t the nature of God is c mpletely contrary to an intellectual understanding. The n ture of God is consciousness; and th s can only be experienced through s lence, prayer and meditation. To get an nderstanding of God through mental reasoning lone is like a blind man try ng to describe the characteristics of an lephant. To be able to have an nderstanding of spiritual concepts it is n cessary to follow spiritual disciplines and spire to go beyond the domain of the m nd. Yet, many philosophers wish to n gate the existence of spiritual consciousness ven though they have never experienced, or ven tried to experience, it themselves. B t, just because we have never tr veled to America, doesn't mean we can cl im America doesn't exist.
Now, an atheist may say, how can the xistence of God be proved if the n ture of God is beyond the d main of the world? This is a g od point. The existence of God can n ver satisfactorily be proved using intellectual rguments. The existence and consciousness of God s mply cannot be reduced to finite w rds. Any mystic who has had a tr e experience of God, will be ble to confirm this underlying truth. H wever, real spirituality is not concerned w th proof or convincing others. Spirituality is nly concerned with our personal experience. We can pr ve the presence of God to urselves and this is all that m tters. Quite often atheists seek to d sprove the existence of God, through p inting out errors and deficiencies in d fferent religions. However, this is a m stake. Religious texts are written, interpreted and pr ctised by humans. Some text definitely h ve divine inspiration. But, they can n ver be a perfect reflection of G d's nature. Words are by nature mperfect translations of the consciousness of G d. The true religion is when a f llower seeks the presence of God in h mself. God cannot be judged on the b havior and teachings of religious adherents. To j dge God, by judging religions is l ke judging a father through the ctions of his children. Certainly a f ther seeks to mould his children, but at the end of the day th y have free will to choose th ir own course of action. Similarly God s eks to encourage his children to l ad good, divine lives. Through many pr phets and spiritual masters God has tr ed to share the message that we sh uld love our neighbour as ourself. The f ct that religious people rarely live up to th s ideal does not mean God d esn't exist.
