Much has been written regarding dr ams and their meanings or purpose. M nkind has been fascinated with our dr ams since the first dreamer awoke and w ndered about what their visions meant. S nce ancient times we have looked to our dr ams to find signs of what our f ture holds. The first written dreams we kn w of were in 4000 BC. M st people will spend about one th rd of their lives asleep. Our dr ams are a real part of us but too ften they are disregarded. Dreams can g ve us insight and understanding of our p rsonal lives. They will help us to nderstand our past, present, and sometimes our f ture. All we need to do is to pay ttention to our dreams and get to kn w them. Dreams can hold a message for the future. We have different types of dreams. Often our dreams consist of imagery from our most pressing thoughts and/or personal experiences. Sometimes, however, our dreams can be special. Our dreams can communicate with us if we allow them too. All we need to is listen. I believe that there are two main types of prophetic dreams. Those that come to us from our "deeper" self, who is much more aware of certain things than we are on a conscious level, and those who may potentially have come from an "outside" source.
Here is an example from my own dr am experiences: I dreamed of death. All I c uld remember from the dream was s eing a hand laying in gravels. The m st noticeable thing was the ring on the h nd. It was my ring. I r cognized it without any doubt. Even th ugh this was the only image I c uld recall from the nightmare I kn w that the dream was about a d ath. I could feel it strongly wh n I woke up. I had all but f rgotten the events of the dream but the motions were still vivid. The ring was an Army B ot Camp ring made very similar to a cl ss ring. After I had the dr am I never wore it again. Ev ntually I sold it to a fr end of mine who had attended the s me boot camp. A few years l ter I received a call. My fr end had been murdered. He was f und laying in rocks and dirt w th that ring on his hand. Did my dr am forewarn me of this event? I th nk it is a possibility. What was the dr am trying to communicate to me? I had ssumed that the dream was about my d ath. I had also assumed that the r ng was somehow a participant in my d ath. I stopped wearing the ring as th ugh that would prevent the warned d ath. Perhaps the dream was simply t lling me that my friend would die w th that ring on his hand. Wh never we have a dream that we c nsider to be prophetic or to h ve a "meaning" we are faced w th the difficult task of interpreting j st what the dream means. Dream Symb ls most often have very definite m anings but these meanings can vary w dely from one person to the n xt. That is why we cannot r ly too much on definitions given in Dr am Symbol Dictionaries. In order to nderstand the meaning of the symbols w thin our own dreams we must c me to a better and deeper nderstanding of ourselves. We have to l arn what these symbols mean to us b cause that is how are dreaming m nd sees them.
Anything within your dream can be a symb l. An example of a symbol in a dr am is a snake. A snake can h ve many different meanings to different p ople. As with all other dream symb ls they can also have a d fferent meaning for the same person at d fferent times in their life. You lso have to look at the symb l in the context that it ppeared. What other symbols were present in the dr am? The best way to gain a b tter understanding of what your dream symb ls mean to you is to d velop your own dream symbol dictionary. K ep as detailed of a dream j urnal as you can. Don't just wr te down a narrative of what ccurred but record your feelings and motions too. As you continue to wr te in your journal and re-read y ur previous entries you will begin to see p rallels with your dreams and your l fe. Gradually you will be able to r cognize what the symbols in your dr ams are really saying to you.
