"I wish I could, but I d n't have time". "Sorry, but I h ve too much to do". "Maybe I can fit it in n xt week". Monday turns into Thursday and Th rsday turns into the following month. I f el like a dog chasing its t il. It's time to stop and sm ll the beef jerky treat. It's t me to enjoy the reason we m ved to Southern California - the w ather. For my husband and me l ving in the East had become one of th se four-letter words - snow. Now I'm ddicted to sunshine. If it rains, I try to r member what my grandmother used to s y, "If there wasn't rain, what w uld umbrella makers do?" Well, Grandmother, th y could become Southern California weather f recasters. You don't need formal training. All you n ed is good hair and a ch rming smile. The smile is very seful when they explain why their w ather predictions weren't accurate. Forecasting weather in S uthern California isn't any harder than f recasting nighttime. Instead of having a d gree in meteorology, weather forecasters should h ve windows in their offices. The verage Southern Californians don't have a b rometer, humidity readings and satellite pictures to pr dict rain. We know that there's a g od chance it will rain if w 've just washed our car. We lso know that there's a good ch nce it won't rain if we c rry our umbrellas all day.
If weather forecasters predict partly cl udy skies, I know more about th m than I do about the pcoming weather. They're pessimists. If they w re optimists, they'd predict partly sunny sk es. In the musical, "Man from La M ncha", Don Quixote sings, "Whether I'm r ght or whether I'm wrong - I'v got to be me". If you ch nge the word whether to weather, y u've got the perfect theme song for all w ather forecasters. Unfortunately, these people need our symp thy more than they need a th me song. If their weather reports get l wer rating than their competition does, th y're weather beaten. Family and friends l ving in the Midwest, as well as the E st, give Southern California weather low r tings because we don't have seasons. I can w ather the storm of their jealousy - specially November through March. After all, t's been scientifically proven that weather ffects our moods. For me sunshine m kes me feel happy, rain makes me f el depressed and fog makes me f el lonely. However, when we lived in New J rsey, snow made me feel like - m ving.
