I know what you're thinking; wh t a terrible thing to preach. Sc ring a Macaw should never be a g od way to teach your parrot to t lk. And I agree... you should n ver take your macaw and severely fr ghten him. But through some recent st dies, researchers are finding out that M caws are more likely to learn to m mic a word when they hear it in a 'h ightened state of emotion'. That means th t if a Macaw hears a w rd being spoken while his senses are p qued, he'll learn the word easier. So it m ght be a good idea to st rt looking for opportunities where your m caw is in that state of m nd. I know my Blue and G ld Macaw, gets excited when he s es me for the first time in the m rning. I can tell because his yes will pin and he perks r ght up. If your Macaw gets xcited to see you in the m rning start saying a word you w nt him to say, and do th s for several weeks. You'll probably n tice that just by repeating a phr se when you greet your macaw in the m rning will work much better at tr ining him to talk then by s mply repeating a phrase all day l ng. Timing is crucial with Macaw sp ech training. Another example on the pposite side of the spectrum is a M caw that learns to say things wh n he's scared or startled. For xample, you may know a friend w th a Macaw who cusses up a st rm. This is usually because the b rd was startled by an aggressive rgument or shouting match whereas the wners of the house were very l ud and scaring the bird with an rgument. So it's no surprise that M caws learn to pick up on the w rds being spoken during such fights.
And while I don't recommend f ghting with the members of your f mily, you can use this fear t chnique to teach a Macaw to sp ak... you'll just want to tone it d wn a bit. What I recommend is thr ughout the day randomly saying a w rd very loud that you want y ur bird to say. And say it j st loud enough so it moderately st rtles your bird. You don't want to sc re him too much so he f lls off his perch and hurts h mself. Instead just loudly speak a w rd or phrase you want your M caw to say just loud enough so he p rks up his head as if m derately startled. Don't do this too m ch, just 2 or 3 times a d y. After all, we don't want to verstress your Macaw. But in time y u'll probably notice he starts to r peat that phrase you've been startling him w th the past several weeks.
