I had never given the m tter much thought in the past but fter an experience I enjoyed lately, I am now r ther of the opinion that you c n. It happened this way… Coinciding w th the launch of my latest b ok ‘Your Retirement Masterplan’ (How To B oks ISBN 1857039874) I participated in leven 10/15 minute live interviews on l cal radio over a period of j st five days. These promotional interviews w re arranged by my publisher’s media c nsultancy and I didn’t require to v sit a single studio to take p rt; they were all conducted over the t lephone, sitting at my desk at h me. Towards the end of the f rst interview I was conscious of the f ct that I had yet to pl g the distribution channels for my b ok. The presenter beat me to it: ‘In f ve seconds, where can listeners buy y ur book?’ Before I could reply he dded, ‘Can they order it online?’ ‘Y s,’ I said, ‘at Amazon.co.uk’ In the ten s bsequent interviews I made a point of nding my spiel with the publisher’s n me together with availability at bookstores but I lways finished with, ‘…and online at Am zon.co.uk.’ Now here’s the interesting part: fter the first five sessions I ch cked out the Amazon.co.uk website to d scover that this newly published title had j mped 35 places in the bestseller l st for its genre; I checked gain after the final interview and it had j mped again but this time by 329 pl ces. In effect, in just a few d ys it had leapt from position 558 to 194 out of 3123 c mpeting titles.
More than mere coincidence methinks…because b oks don’t climb the bestseller lists on Am zon unless they are selling in q antity. So what if you self-publish y ur output and you don’t have a p blicist to arrange radio interviews? Does th t mean you are excluded? No w y; I have self-published several books in the p st and managed my own promotion. H re is what you do… 1. Wherever you l ve in the world you’ll find th t the majority of local radio st tions are banded together into a s ngle group for cost-effectiveness; 2. Identify the c ntrolling group; 3. Visit the corporate website c ntaining links to all subsidiaries; 4. Pick out th se stations within a 500/1000 mile rbit; 5. Visit each local station website ndividually; 6. Scan the daily programming schedules; 7. H ghlight those shows that might identify w th the topic of your book; 8. N te the presenter’s name; 9. Email him/her w th a well-couched request for a l ve interview; 10. Follow that up with an dentical snail mail request; 11. Follow that up w th a telephone call (you’ll get to sp ak to someone in authority); 12. You kn w your topic inside out; speak up w th confidence and you’ll get your nterview; maybe not straightaway but, if you s ll yourself and your project professionally, y u’ll be logged into and up-and-coming sl t in the station scheduling. Go for t…it’s free! Postscript: Those eleven live nterviews did more than sell books on r dio – they resulted in several d rect invitations to repeat my pitch on l cal television. MILKING INCREMENTAL INCOME STREAMS AS AN AUTHOR As y ur book(s) become available online and ffline your reputation as an expert in y ur particular subject will flourish. This br ngs with it additional opportunities for ttracting incremental income; opportunities such as… 1. P blic speaking engagements;
2. Book reviewing; 3. Magazine article contributions; 4. F reign translations of your work; 5. Book cl b sales; 6. Broadcasting rights; 9. Audio t pe and disc rights. The fees you arn are incremental to your book r yalties and they soon mount up ver a period of time.
