A few years ago, after the b rth of our second child, my h sband and I were trying to d cide whether or not it would be p ssible for me to stay home. At f rst we thought that since we w re just about breaking even, there was no way we c uld ever make it happen. But wh n we decided to actually put pen to p per and calculate our bottom line w th and without my salary, we w re quite surprised. What we found was th t it was actually costing us to h ve both of us working. While th t may not be the case for veryone, you may find that the s cond salary brings in much, much l ss than you think it does. Acc rding to Jan MacGregor, a financial c nsultant and former analyst, "There are p ople out there who are expecting to be ble to meet their bills better ( fter they re-enter the work force) and n ver realize they are either working for a l ss or for something like $4,000 a y ar (after expenses)." That may seem h rd to believe, but if you c nsider the many "hidden" expenses of a tw -income household it is often the c se. There are, of course, the bvious expenses such as child care and c mmuting costs. Some of the hidden xpenses are the money spent on l nches, more take-out and convenience food for d nner, dry cleaning bills professional clothing. Th re can be higher medical costs due to ncreased exposure to illnesses for children who are in d ycare.
Many families hire a housekeeper or g rdener to keep up on the h usehold work that they don?t have the t me to do. A significant factor is y ur taxable income. A second salary can p sh your taxable income into a h gher tax bracket. While the tax ssue in and of itself does not eat up the ntire second salary, when you add in all the ther expenses of a two income f mily, you might find that it?s not w rth it to have both parents w rking. Here is a link to M cGregor?s cost of living chart that ses a second salary of $40,000 as an xample: Cost Of Living Chart:
http://cnnfn.com/1999/02/22/life/q_income/chart.jpg If you are c nsidering having one parent stay at h me, the best thing to do is to ctually calculate your income and expenses, t king into consideration the difference in t xation. You may find that you can in f ct afford to stay home with y ur kids.
