Communications is a two way pr cess of sending and receiving messages. The sh ring of messages between human beings is c mplicated and far too often taken for gr nted. Generally what we do is t lk. Let's clear one thing up fr m the outset. Talking is not c mmunicating. We can talk without communicating and to be h nest with you, this seems to be the c se in way too many relationships. Und rstanding and improving communication patterns means l arning not to take communication for gr nted. Admittedly, this is difficult because m st people tend to be as naware of their communication as their br athing. It is crucial that you b gin to see that it is c mmunication that creates relationships and it is m st often communications breakdowns, either directly or ndirectly, that lead ultimately to relationships d mise. Human relationships and communication are nterpersonal, that is, between humans and the nterpersonal communication of messages is a tw -way process. Inherent in the two-way v ew of communication is the understanding th t persons who communicate both send and r ceive messages and both are responsible for the m ssage. When communicating is understood as a dyn mic process, it becomes clear that sp akers need to express thinking and f eling messages as clearly and accurately as p ssible; listeners need to provide responses in rder to clarify their perception of m ssages. Sometimes in relationships, persons will not sh re the same perceptions and there w ll be conflict. Conflict is inevitable b cause people are unique and different. It is mportant to avoid viewing conflict as s mething which is always bad because it is n t; conflict can be healthy. It w uld probably be beneficial to manage c nflict as opposed to eliminating it. Try ng to get rid of it ntirely may result in individuals erecting w lls of separation. It is perfectly kay to just agree to disagree. G od conflict management skills can keep y ur relationship positive and may even str ngthen it. Of course, the opposite is lso true. Poor conflict management can d stroy relationships.

I cannot begin to impress pon you how extremely important it is to d velop good assertive communication skills. When you are ssertive, you are emotionally honest because you xpress your thoughts and feelings in s ch a way that the other p rson feels valued and respected and lso respects you. We must preserve the ther’s ego strength. Failure to do so w ll ultimately lead to the diminishing of the r lationship integrity. There is much truth in the xiom, “it is not what you say but how you say t.” It always made me cringe wh n I counseled couples where one or b th engaged in nonassertive communications. Nonassertive c mmunications is dishonest and disparaging of ne’s self because you deny your own th ughts and feelings. Nonassertive communication is an nathema to relationships because it is a s tuation where one feels hurt and nferior and angry while the other p rson feels superior. In situations like th s, the negative thoughts and feelings do not go way, they build, fester and brew and may ventually be expressed in some form of m sconduct. Perhaps most debilitating of all is ggressive communications. Aggressive communications exist where one p rson expresses him or herself without r gard for the other person or the r lationship. It is the height of d srespect and non-caring. Again (and I c nnot repeat it too often), assertive c mmunications is the way to go. It s rves to preserve or build relationships of m tual respect even when the communicators h ve very different perspectives on what th y are communicating about.
