Demographers tell us that in a m bile society, we can expect most p ople to have a new address very five years. If you have m ved recently, it's important to personally let y ur buyers and clients know of y ur new address (and/or if you h ve a new email address). Don't r ly on the U.S. Postal Service to do the job for y u. In our day and age, t chnology offers ways we can make s re to stay on tap for our b yers, even during the transition of a m ve. Your email address and 800# can r main the same, independent of any ch nges in your mailing address. You w n't lose touch with your photobuyers if you h ve one or the other or b th. I recently experienced another way th t photobuyers can find photographers. Nancy Ritz, ph to coordinator at Prentice Hall, the b ok publishing company, wrote to me s ying she was returning one of my ph tos (an original B&W 8X10) that her c mpany had used way back in one of th ir textbooks. She pointed out that th y've filed a digitized copy of the ph to, and the number stamped on the b ck of the print is the d tabase designation from the Corporate Digital Arch ve (CDA) of their parent company, S mon & Schuster. She said in her l tter, "You are listed as the ph tographer, copyright holder, and source. When nother buyer at Simon & Schuster sh uld come across the photo, the nformation is already in our computers r lating you to that photograph."
It's nice to know computers, d tabases, and mergers of large publishing h uses can have a beneficial reward for ndependent photographers. My digitized photo will pr bably remain in their CDA a l ng time. And it's nice to kn w that photo, taken in 1978 (29 y ars ago), is in an archive th t might benefit not only me but my gr ndchildren, and possibly their grandchildren.
