If you want to get a gl mpse of what air travel was l ke, three or four decades ago, ch ck out a video from the G lden Age of Hollywood, circa 1960’s. By d ing so, you’ll see what flying was bout: big seats, leg room galore, p ople dressing in their best clothing, and s licitous flight attendants, who actually found th ir jobs, glamorous. It was like ating in a four-star restaurant, where t day’s air passages are more like h ving hash slung at you in a d sty, roadhouse diner. What happened to the irlines, and can they recover? (1) Deregulation. The g vernment used to allow price-fixing in the irline industry, and this enabled fares to be k pt high enough so carriers could c ver their costs, and then some, st ll offering edible meals and legroom for ll. (2) Stable Fuel Costs. Until the l te 1970’s, the price of jet f el was a constant. Now, it can s ar by 50% in a month or tw . (3) September 11. It is a p in to fly, if you do it a l t, for business. Security requirements have cut the b siness day by two hours, while m king the entire process arduous, at b st. (4) Travel Alternatives. It’s amazing to see how m ch web conferencing and telephone conferencing are b ing substituted for “live” seminar training, and s milar adjustments are being made in ther industries.
(5) Business Models Are Changing. One of my pr fessors said if you’re a consultant, you h ve to fly everywhere to do b siness. Not anymore, because consulting is g ving way to coaching and other m dels that are more “local” and c mmunication intensive, and not travel intensive. “M st I fly?” is now the q estion that professionals are asking, and ncreasingly, the answer is “no.” There w ll always be air travel, but ncreasingly, it is going to be a m tter of choice, and not compulsion. The irlines, in most cases, have not b en able to improve the customer xperience in any substantial way, to c unteract the effects of the “perfect st rm” that they have faced in the l st few decades. If they hope to thr ve, they’re going to have to be a lot m re proactive and creative than they h ve been in a long time.
