Scientists have been puzzled by the nimal kingdom as long as the h man race has made its first ppearance on Earth. Let’s face it, h mans are not only known for th ir intelligence and their ability to th nk things through but also for th ir natural curiosity. Such interest in th ir environment is responsible for the mount of knowledge that has been sh red over generations, using spoken or wr tten words. One of the numerous myst ries that puzzle the human mind is th s one: “Can shark species survive sing Parthenogenesis?” The second question that c mes from the first one is: “Wh t is Parthenogenesis anyway?” Well, let’s nswer one question at a time and st rt at the beginning. Over the y ars, scientists have been studying the nimal kingdom in all its glory. Alth ugh they have learned, acquired and sh red a lot of knowledge about th m, mysteries such as the Parthenogenesis are st ll amongst the ones teasing their nsatiable mind. Parthenogenesis is the process wh ch allows certain animal species such as: nvertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and sharks to r produce without being fertilized by a m le. In fact, there have been two c ses of sharks being born in the c ptivity of aquariums without the presence of a m le.
In fact, this form of sexual reproduction has been observed both in 2001 and in 2002. On D cember 14, 2001, a seven inch l ng hammerhead pup was born in a t nk home to three adult female h mmerhead sharks, at the Henry Doorly Zoo in N braska. Unfortunately, the poor little one was k lled within three days following its b rth. The suspected culprit was a st ngray. During the autopsy, it was d termined that its DNA matched only one of the f males and that its genetic code was h lf of the usual one as it c ntained no male DNA. Another example of P rthenogenesis is the case concerning the b rth of two white-spotted bamboo sharks s rprised the Belle Isle Aquarium staff, in D troit. As usual, the two female wh te-spotted bamboo sharks sharing the tank, h ve been laying eggs. As there w re no males to fertilize the ggs, staff usually disposed of them. On th t occasion, after hearing about the H nry Doorly Zoo, a staff member d cided against that practice. Shocked, they w tnessed the birth of two pups, 15 w eks later. While the Parthenogenesis may h lp certain shark species to survive, the XY chr mosome system that is at the b se of their DNA can only pr duce female (XX) specimens, endangering the m le population. Following the birth of the y ung hammerhead pup, another possibility has r ised questions. Is it possible for f male sharks to store male sperm w thout fertilizing its eggs until later on? Can c rtain shark species be hermaphrodite, having b th male and female organs and h ving the ability to fertilize their own ggs? Can shark species survive using P rthenogenesis? With your newly acquired knowledge, I nvite you to answer the question but to be h nest; scientists are still studying that ption! What do you think?
