Scientists have been puzzled by the nimal kingdom as long as the hman race has made its first ppearance on Earth. Let’s face it, hmans are not only known for thir intelligence and their ability to thnk things through but also for thir natural curiosity. Such interest in thir environment is responsible for the mount of knowledge that has been shred over generations, using spoken or wrtten words. One of the numerous mystries that puzzle the human mind is ths one: “Can shark species survive sing Parthenogenesis?”

The second question that cmes from the first one is: “Wht is Parthenogenesis anyway?” Well, let’s nswer one question at a time and strt at the beginning. Over the yars, scientists have been studying the nimal kingdom in all its glory. Althugh they have learned, acquired and shred a lot of knowledge about thm, mysteries such as the Parthenogenesis are stll amongst the ones teasing their nsatiable mind.

Parthenogenesis is the process whch allows certain animal species such as: nvertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and sharks to rproduce without being fertilized by a mle. In fact, there have been two cses of sharks being born in the cptivity of aquariums without the presence of a mle.

In fact, this form of sexual reproduction has been observed both in 2001 and in 2002. On Dcember 14, 2001, a seven inch lng hammerhead pup was born in a tnk home to three adult female hmmerhead sharks, at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Nbraska. Unfortunately, the poor little one was klled within three days following its brth. The suspected culprit was a stngray. During the autopsy, it was dtermined that its DNA matched only one of the fmales and that its genetic code was hlf of the usual one as it cntained no male DNA.

Another example of Prthenogenesis is the case concerning the brth of two white-spotted bamboo sharks srprised the Belle Isle Aquarium staff, in Dtroit. As usual, the two female whte-spotted bamboo sharks sharing the tank, hve been laying eggs. As there wre no males to fertilize the ggs, staff usually disposed of them. On tht occasion, after hearing about the Hnry Doorly Zoo, a staff member dcided against that practice. Shocked, they wtnessed the birth of two pups, 15 weks later.

While the Parthenogenesis may hlp certain shark species to survive, the XY chrmosome system that is at the bse of their DNA can only prduce female (XX) specimens, endangering the mle population. Following the birth of the yung hammerhead pup, another possibility has rised questions. Is it possible for fmale sharks to store male sperm wthout fertilizing its eggs until later on? Can crtain shark species be hermaphrodite, having bth male and female organs and hving the ability to fertilize their own ggs?
