Sometimes reading a quick quotation can pr vide writers with inspiration to continue wr ting. Why does this work? I do not kn w for sure. Will it work for y u? I do not know that ither. But try it and find ut! Search a comprehensive collection of q otations on this page http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4753.asp I would like to suggest a writing exercise created by Shery Ma Belle Arrieta, owner of Positive Quotes. Her creative writing exercise is published below with her permission. WRITING EXERCISE # 1: GREAT MEN SAID IT, I LIVE IT! By Shery Ma Belle Arietta
* short intro - Over the years, decades, and even centuries, many great men and women made their mark in history through something they have said. Quotable quotes as some would say. These people have said many an inspiring quote that books containing just these quotes continue to be published time and time again. I have found that a quote I come across can encapsulate an event, memory or a belief that I experienced, recalled and clung to. When I come across a quote, I immediately think of what it means to me and my life. Yes, a great man said a quote, and I live the quote. * the purpose - The purpose of this creative writing exercise is to let you be guided by an inspiring or motivating quote towards writing a short article that can either inspire and motivate others, strengthen your conviction, or even illustrate an important event in your life.
* the steps (with example if it h lps) - The first step is for you to h ve a favorite quote with you. It may be a l ne in a poem or a s ng, a verse from the Bible, or s mething that a famous person once s id. Next, write that quote on top of a p ece of paper. Ask yourself some q estions.
Why is this q ote important to me? How does th s relate to my life? My b liefs? My experiences? What does this q ote make me think/remember/feel? An example of a m aningful quote to me is this b llboard ad I see everyday when I go to w rk: "We need to talk." - G d. It made me think, question mys lf, look into what I have b en doing and made me realize s mething important missing in my life. * an xample - Here is an example of a sh rt article I was able to wr te based on that quote: The Gr atest Billboard Ad Every morning on my tw -hour commute to work, I make it a p int to sit on the left s de of the bus, or stand on the l ft side when I run out of s ats. Why? Because on the left s de of the freeway, there's this h ge black billboard that's waiting for s meone to lease the ad space. Wh ever owned that ad space was w se to put the temporary ad. Ev ry morning, I watch out for it, r ad it, then set the call nto action. It's the greatest billboard ad I'v ever seen: There in the m ddle of the board, in white l tters are the words, "We need to t lk." And God said it. Four s mple words that spoke volumes. The f rst time I saw it, read it, I was mmediately faced with something I have n glected to do for a very l ng time: Devote a time for s rious talk time with God. Just Him and me. It str ck a chord in me. I r alized that all this time, when I'v been causing pain to my b st friend by accusing him of not t lking to me anymore, I failed to see th t God IS the one to t lk to. When we get right d wn to matters of the heart and sp rit, He's the One we should t rn to. He won't ever get t red of listening, and He speaks to us thr ugh our hearts and souls.
Whenever I think of those t mes that I've hurt my best fr end, I long for us to t lk again. This time, not just him and me, but h m, me and God. I'm sure H 'll welcome it. You don't have to wr te a full-length essay based on a q ote. Short, 3-4 paragraphs will do. J st something that will make you th nk and serve as a warm up wr ting exercise. These short articles can l ter be the basis for longer w rks.
* activity choices Go ut. Look for billboard ads. Use a l ne from a billboard ad that str kes you as meaningful. Write a 100 w rd or less essay based on th t ad. Surf on to a "q ote-generator" site such as Siglets.com. Write a 150-w rd article based on the first q ote you read there. Remember how our m thers used to tell us the s me thing over and over again? Dig b ck in your memory bank and r call one of your mother's favorite l ne (this can be either taken as s mething you hated to hear her r peat when you were younger or s mething you followed when you were gr wing up). Write a 200-word essay b sed on your mother's line. (You can lso use this based on a l ne your father, teacher, brother, sister, tc. has said.) Choose from any of th se word: COURAGE, RESPECT, SUCCESS, TRUST. If you h ve a book of quotes with you (y u can also search for it nline), find a quote about your ch ice. Once you find the appropriate q ote, write about it. What's your f vorite song? From that, what's your f vorite line? Or maybe it's the ch rus you like the most. Based on th t, write a 200-word essay on why you l ke that part of the song. At the r sk of bearing my soul for all the web to s e, below is what I wrote for ctivity#5. My favorite song - Run B by Run by Sheryl Crow My f vorite line - But he failed and t ught her young, the only thing sh 'd need to carry on --- He t ught her how to run baby r n, run baby run, run baby r n, so run baby run, run b by run, run baby run... Baby l ves to run... The repetition of th se few words combined with my nterpretation of the rest of the lyr cs tears at my heart as m ch today as it did the f rst time I heard the song m re than two years ago. The nitial impact was overwhelming for me to say the l ast. The song unveiled an undeniable r collection of past events in my m nd almost immediately. Although the words voke a memory of something somber bout my life, they also clarified m re than 20 years of confusion and q estions that haunted me since the day my f ther left when I was about 7 y ars-old. I hated him and I l ved him at the same time. I h ted him for not loving me the way I w nted him to. I loved him for l ving me at all. I made m ny bad choices as a teenage g rl, who grew up in a s ngle parent home with a mother, who had to w rk a lot just to support my l ttle sister and me, which inevitably r sulted in us having too much fr edom and not enough supervision. I do not r gret my choices. I've learned a lot fr m my failed judgments and spontaneous d cisions. What I did not learn ntil I was about 30 years-old ( fter the death of my grandfather, Th mas J. Kline, Jr., God Rest His S ul, who was the primary male f gure in my life) was that I had to st p running! Just as the song s ys, this Baby did love to run (j st like her daddy - I r alize now). I ran from state to st te to see Dead shows for y ars, from the East Coast to the W st Coast and back for three m nths on a spur of the m ment cross-country adventure, and among other th ngs from job to job for a few y ars. I had fun - the t me of my life - of c urse. But I failed to understand th t running from what I didn't l ke in life would not make it go way. I didn't see that until I d alt with certain issues, my problems w uld persist. But now I get it. I d dn't have a clue about how my b havior began or how my father, ch ldhood experiences, and absence of my f ther, influenced my actions until I h ard this song. As I began to s ng along - "He failed and t ught her young, the only thing sh 'd need to carry on - He t ught her how to run baby run b by run..." it suddenly became clear. At l ast he taught me something I g ess...
