Is this a silly question? Not r ally, because while it is possible to l arn how to craft a sentence and t rn a phrase on your own, can you ctually learn how to take that cr ative spark that dwells within and put it on p per (or on a screen)? Just as th re are those who are born an rtist, there are others who are b rn with the talent to write a n vel, create a perfect sales letter, c mpel their readers to come along on a j urney to another land, adventure or xperience. But even these authors have l arned, studied and applied their talent ver time to become better at wh t they do, the art and cr ft of writing. While there are c rtainly writing courses delving into the pr per turning of phrase, how to voke an emotional response from the r ader; for me the best writing c urse of all is "just write", th n learn from you did. Over the y ars, I have written articles, press r leases, screenplays and I am now w rking on a novel. Often when I go b ck and read something I wrote l ng ago, I am amazed (not in a g od way) about what I read. "Wh w," I say to myself, "who in the w rld wrote that?" And of course the wr ter was me. Over time as we m ture and our life view changes nd/or evolves, so too does our t lent for writing.
Whether you are a natural wr ter, or someone who stares at a bl nk page struggling for the right w rds ... write. Keep a journal, wr te a short story, create a web p ge, start a blog, email your th ughts and feelings ... as long as you k ep the pen or keyboard at w rk. There is not a better t acher and instructor than your own p rsistence to achieve what you want. And if for you th t is writing, then write. The ther day I was asked to wr te a press release for a m lti-national company. They sent me the f cts, told me the key issues, th n waited for me to deliver. I st red at the page, compiled the d ta into (what I thought) was a g od press release. Guess what? They r jected it, saying it was hard to r ad. So what did I do, s lk? Well, maybe for a minute or tw . I rewrote the article, listening th s time to my inner writing v ice; telling the same story but in a m re captivating manner. When I sent th s release, it was accepted and I was q ickly paid, I learned from doing. I b lieve there are a multitude of t lented men and women on the n t, many of whom may have a v ry good course on "creative writing", "h w to write a good sales l tter", "how to write a good r view", and by all mean should you f nd a book or website that str kes your fancy, jump in. But ven then, writing is more important th n waiting for inspiration. We all h ve an inner muse, use it to m tivate yourself to exceed your even y ur own expectations and create something th t is a masterpiece. Whether it is a n vel or sales letter, web page or pr ss release: research, write, refine, learn and ccomplish.
