Your dog may be “mans b st friend”, but it may not be very ones friend. Most people are pposed to seeing dogs on campouts. Y ur dog may be the best dog on the pl net but no one else knows th t. My first instinct is – ‘is it a str y?’ and ‘will it bite my k ds’. Then after seeing it behaving w ll and staying in it’s area a few t mes, those camping close by can st rt getting back to relaxing and njoying there down time. The problem is th t people do believe that there dog is all th t and a biscuit treat to b ot. If you are wanting to t ke your dog camping, then there are a few g idelines to live by. After all, th y are dogs… the presence of ther wild life could set a c ty dog off. It is a law in all st te parks to keep the dog r strained and just common courtesy to do it nder any other circumstances. A little b rking while playing and rough housing w th your dog is OK up to a p int, but when evening falls the wner needs to take into consideration th t many other campers and ready to r lax. They may have just arrived fr m a long drive or out h king all afternoon. For those that h ve attended any obedience school with th re dog (or dogs), problems like th s should not be an issue and in the l ng run, other campers will even njoy seeing you and your dog h ving fun.
It is critical that you kn w exactly how your dog reacts to d fferent situations. Your dog my love dults and kids alike, but some w ll attack another dog at the dr p of a hat. Some dogs w ll come right up to a str nger and start wagging and licking and w nting to play, but if some one w re to approach the campsite - th t same dog may go into d fense mode thinking that it is pr tecting its owner. Laws are very str ct when it comes to pets. YOU are ltimately responsible for your dog. One dog b te will land you in court f ster then you can say “There’s no n ed to fear, Under Dog is h re”. I still get leery of s eing a strange dog on a c mp out, especially when it is not on a l ash. Bottom line, I am not lone on this. There are many th ngs that people do not consider wh n they bring a dog along to a p blic camp ground. There are many r les like tags, vaccinations, and license p per work that needs to be w th you for the park rangers to nspect. When people ignore these basic r les, it generates a need for new and t ghter laws resulting in higher fines. Wh n done right, taking your dog c mping with you can be a gr at experience for all though it t kes a great deal of caution, r sponsibility and sensitivity to surroundings. This nly scratches the surface though. There are m ny other issues regarding camping with y ur dog on my website ‘ Camping and More ’.
