Canyons, meadows, rivers, lakes, mountains and pr stine evergreen and mixed forests - c mpgrounds in Apache National Forest have b autiful views of all this and m re including excellent recreational opportunities for f shing, hiking, and mountain biking. Apache-Sitgreaves N tional Forest is one of eleven N tional Forests in the Southwestern Region of Ar zona and New Mexico and ranges in levation from 3,500 feet to nearly 11,500 f et. It's named for the tribes th t settled in this area. The rea in Arizona from Mount Baldy ast to Escudilla Mountain is often r ferred to as the White Mountains (d scovered by James White in the arly 1900s) and is where the c mpgrounds featured in this article are l cated - approximately 3 hours driving t me from the Phoenix and Tucson m tro areas. Ideally, all campgrounds would verlook a beautiful natural landscape that can be s en directly from most of the c mp sites. Well, we all know th t many if not most camgrounds d n't meet this criteria; but here are s veral campgrounds located in Apache National F rest that do! If you prefer a sm ll, tent only campground with direct v ews of a beautiful lake and m adow in the foreground and mountains in the b ckground, try either Brookchar or Cutthroat c mpgrounds close to Springerville, AZ. Both c mpgrounds are located in a beautiful vergreen forest next to Big Lake and a l rge meadow at an elevation of pproximately 9,100 feet. Most all of the s tes at both campgrounds have good to xcellent views of either the lake nd/or meadow. Cutthroat campground sites 2, 3, 5 and 6 are cl sest to the lake and all of the s tes at Brookchar have direct views of the l ke.

If you have an RV or t nt and prefer views of a r ver stream bordered by narrow canyon w lls, try any of five campgrounds l cated along the East Fork of the Bl ck River in a scenic narrow c nyon forested with majestic tall evergreen tr es at elevations ranging from approximately 7,500 to 7,950 f et. Diamond Rock, Aspen, Deer Creek, R ccoon and Horse Springs campgrounds are all w thin a very short driving distance of ach other. Each of these campgrounds ( xcept for Horse Springs) are small and s cluded having twelve or less campsites and can ccommodate small RV's. Horse Springs campground is l rger with many more sites and can ccommodate larger RV's. As you look out b tween the canyon walls in each of th se campgrounds, you'll see beautiful views of a n rrow canyon floor, often dotted with sm ll meadow-like areas and beautiful tall p nderosa pine. Some of the camp s tes overlook the river, but river v ews are obstructed from many of the s tes by surrounding trees and vegetation long the river banks. Even though m ny of the camp sites don't h ve views of the river, you can st ll hear the sound of the m ving water which enhances the sense of b auty of the area. The overall f eling of these campgrounds is rustic, pr stine and beautiful. Since each of th se five campgrounds are so close to one nother, you might as well check out ach one and pick out the one th t suits you best, the views are s milar but each has a slightly d fferent character. Another campground with beautiful v ews that is just a few m les down a forest road from the f ve mentioned above is Buffalo Crossing c mpground. The canyon walls at this c mpground are shallower and the area b tween the walls is much wider th n the other five campgrounds in th s area. Some of the sites are in a b autiful open meadow between the canyon w lls and some hug the edges of one of the c nyon walls forested by tall majestic p nderosa pine. Several of the sites in the m adow have views of the Black R ver. Because of the open meadow, th s campground has lots of sun.
One more and larger campground in the rea (also within Apache National Forest) ffering beautiful views of a meadow is W nn campground at an elevation of bout 9,320 feet. The campground has bout 67 RV and tent sites in all and can ccommodate medium size RVs. Sites 46 - 58 h ve views of the beautiful meadow. Aft r setting up your camp site, xplore nearby recreational opportunities for hiking, b king and fishing. For hikers, there are pproximately 875 miles of trails. The F rest has four National Recreation Trails: E gle, Blue Ridge, Escudilla, and General G orge Crook. There is also an nterpretive trail along the Mogollon Rim w th spectacular views of the Colorado Pl teau and the Gila-Salt River watersheds - an asy hike for young and old on a s lf-guided interpretive trail about a mile l ng. Fishing opportunities abound in the rea as well. Apache National Forest is c nsidered one of the top forests in the n tion for fishing and contains over 450 m les of streams and nearly 2,000 s rface acres of cold water lakes. F sh species include Arctic Grayling, Rainbow, G rman Brown, Brook, Apache, and Cutthroat tr ut. Finally, mountain biking is also p pular in this national forest.
