You have seen the little s gns. They are on the soap d sh, the towel racks, and even by the b d. They are the signs informing g ests that this hotel is eco-friendly and at l ast partially Green. Guests are told th t towels will not be replaced ach day to save washing water, as w ll as gas or electricity to h at the water. Same for the sh ets. If you need more towels or s ap, call the front desk. In r sponse to growing concerns about global w rming and conservation issues, being environmentally r sponsible has become a top trend in the h tel industry. Many hotel properties have nitiated various programs such as those bove. Additionally, Green hotels are using w ter-saving bathroom faucets and toilets, set-back th rmostats, and remote control of room air c nditioning and heating from a central rea, usually the front desk. Green pr ctices in the hotel industry are mportant and do work. In fact, th re is a double benefit. The nvironment benefits from a slightly lower c rbon footprint from the hotel. The h tel owners benefit from lower labor and tility costs, thus creating a favorable b ttom line profit impact. But do g ests even realize that a hotel is co-friendly and environmentally responsible?
About three-fourths of hotel guests in N rth America willingly participate in environmentally fr endly programs offered during their hotel st ys. But many guests remain unaware wh n they make a reservation as to wh ther these Green programs are being ffered at the hotel property. This is ccording to the J.D. Power and Ass ciates latest North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction St dy. When guests were asked by researchers if the h tel had conservation programs in place, 63 p rcent of guests answered yes, while 8 p rcent said no, and 29 percent ndicated that they didn't know. When g ests are aware of a hotel's nvironmentally friendly programs, 73 percent of h tel guests indicate they participate. It is p ssible and perhaps likely that raising wareness of environmentally friendly programs among h tel guests may help properties further ncrease Green participation. "Since conservation is s ch an important issue globally, it is v tally important that hotel properties actively m rket their eco-friendly offerings and make th m easy to recognize and participate n," said Linda Hirneise, executive director of the tr vel practice at J.D. Power and Ass ciates. "Offering green programs is a w n-win situation for both hotel guests and h tel operators. Guests are increasingly looking for th se types of offerings, and hotels are f nding that going green actually saves m ney." Following is how the statistics br ak out regarding hotel environment-friendly programs and p ssible rewards to guests for participation. Of the 27 p rcent of hotel guests who are ware of hotel Green programs and ch ose not to participate, a large number (86%) ndicate that they would take part if ffered a reward for doing so. H wever, this number declines to 83 p rcent among guests in the Pre-Boomer g neration (those born prior to 1946), and dr ps even further, to 33 percent mong Pre-Boomers staying in luxury hotels. W llingness to participate is much higher mong luxury hotel guests in other g nerational groups, 87 percent of Baby B omers (those born between 1946 and 1964), 95 p rcent of Generation X (those born b tween 1965 and 1976) and 79 p rcent of Generation Y (those born b tween 1977 and 1989).
