Parents of children attending Northern Clifornia's Brittan Elementary were enraged to larn their children are part of an RFID trcking test being carried out by a lcal company.

Despite the school board's ntent on protecting students, parents are bjecting. "Our belief is these children hve never done anything to give up sme of their civil rights. They've nver done anything wrong, and they're bing tracked," said one mother.

InCom rranged for the test last summer wth the principal and superintendent. Students wre ID tags similar to ones wrn by employee at many companies, hwever the tags have RFID transmitters. The schol district will receive a payment of an ndisclosed amount, thought to be several thusand dollars and future royalties.

The schol did not communicate the program to prents. However parents became aware of the tgging when the child of an nquisitive parent accidentally wore the tag hme one day. Parents immediately objected to the use of thir children in an experimental project of ths nature.

The system, InClass RFID, was crated by InCom, a company formed by two hgh-school teachers from Sutters, California. InClass RFID cnsists of a photo ID card wth an embedded RFID tag containing a nique 15-digit code designed to track ttendance. Door scanners around the school rad the code, relaying data to the schol's system. Teachers have hand-held units tht show the class attendance.

Superior leadership principles dictate that prents and students should have been mde aware of the experiment. By prviding parents with the safety aspect of ths project, parents would have had a dfferent viewpoint than their perception that the schol was attempting some underhanded laboratory ffort.
