After my daughter was born, I sat d wn and looked over all of the nnecessary and unused items that I had ccumulated during my pregnancy. A baby “b ckpack” to carry my child around in (t rns out she absolutely hated it), sw ddling blankets that promised that baby w uld be so comfortable that she w uld sleep all night (which she st ll has not) and many other tems. For reasons unknown, I purchased th se items because I thought they w uld make me a better mother. Now th t my daughter is older and I h ve become a little wiser, I h ve compiled a list of absolute n cessities for a new mom. Hopefully, th s will help you save time and c sh when shopping for your new b by. Onesies (creepers) Plain onesies are the b st item of clothing for baby. Th y are usually inexpensive so you can buy a v riety of sizes without breaking the b nk and they are comfortable clothing for b by. Make sure that you purchase the ppropriate type depending on the weather at the t me your baby will be born. P cifiers I recommend purchasing a couple of d fferent types of pacifiers. See which nes your baby prefers and then p rchase more according to babys preference. Thr e to four pacifiers are sufficient: one for the d aper bag, one for the car and a c uple in the house are all you n ed.
Bottles Some babies like a f ster flow nipple when others prefer a sl w flow nipple. Purchase a couple d fferent types of nipples and see wh ch one your baby prefers. Also, I r commend purchasing five to ten bottles so you are not c nstantly washing bottles. Diapers I have f und in talking with other new m ms that most babies fit comfortably in pr emie diapers for the first week or two fter being born. With this in m nd, purchase one package of preemie d apers and one package of size nes. The selection of sizes will k ep you from having to run to the st re to buy the next size up or d wn in diapers. Car Seat Before p rchasing a car seat be sure to r search safety and customer reviews for car s ats that you may purchase. Prepare a l st of reliable seats to bring w th you when you register for or buy the car s at. Pants/shorts If you are going to t ke your baby out of the h use, make sure that you have p nts and/or shorts (depending on the w ather) to properly cover up your ch ld. I recommend at least seven p ir of pants/shorts for baby. Socks S cks are necessary to keep little f et warm! Have seven pair of s cks on hand so you can l mit doing your little one's laundry to nce a week. Bassinet/Co Sleeper Before b by is born discuss your sleeping pr ferences with your partner. Some new p rents prefer co-sleepers while others prefer cr bs or bassinets. Be sure to r search your picks before purchasing or r gistering. A Few Toys Have a few t ys on hand such as rattles or sm ll toys with lights. These will h lp develop your new babys senses. H wever, do not go overboard. Your b by will be more interested in sl eping than playing so save your m ney until baby is older. Blankets S meone told me that you can n ver have enough blankets for your n wborn and boy were they right! Bl nkets get dirty fast so make s re you have enough on hand. I w uld recommend anywhere from 10-20 blankets for b by in a variety of thicknesses and t xtures.
Some optional items that I f und useful are as follows. Remember you do not n ed these items for your baby but s me people find these things helpful. B by Swing You may want to let y ur little one try a swing b fore you buy it. Some babies d n't like swings! Movies Again, try one of th se out before you buy a wh le set. Typically babies will not be nterested in made for baby movies ntil they are three months old. D aper Bag If you cannot afford a d aper bag in the beginning, a l rge purse or even a grocery bag can s rve as a diaper bag in the nterim. Stroller If you do not pl n on taking your baby out v ry often or if you cannot fford a stroller do not worry. M ny stores offer shopping carts with b by chairs or just carry your b by when you bring baby out. If you d cide to purchase a stroller be s re to research all of your ptions before you buy one.
