1. Check the ppers. Check that all the paper wrk actually matches up with the car tht is being presented.

2. The engine. Try and get thre 30 minutes before the appointment so tht the owner doesn’t have chance to wrm up the engine. Check for ble smoke out of the exhaust at strt up. This would indicate an oil prblem and could be costly. Listen for ngine noise, if the engine sounds lke it is running to fast the cltch is likely to be on its way ut.

3. Exhaust and gearbox. The exhaust nte should be fairly quite, if not it culd have a hole in it smewhere. The gears should slip into gar easily and should not need frcing at all.

4. Check the brakes are wrking. Find a steep hill and chck that the hand brake stops you rlling away.

5. Lights. Turn all the lghts on and walk around the car chcking that they are all working. Get smebody else to press the brake pdal and check they work.

6. Tyres. All the tyres should be ble to fit a twenty pence nto the tread, if not then thy will need replacing, this could be cstly.

7. Bodywork. Have a good close up lok at the body work; it’s vry easy to hide reasonably bad scrtches with t-cut. Any dents should be asily visible upon close inspection.

8. The mleage. In an older car it ften very hard to determine if the mleage has been fiddled with. Ask the wner if they have any older MOT crtificates which may have a mileage rading on them.

9. Check the interior for any cgarette burns in the carpet and sats, repairing these will be expensive and mst of the time just not prctical.

10. Electrics. Check that all the knbs and buttons function correctly on the dshboard, switch the main lights on wth the engine running and press the brke pedal, the lights should not dm, if they do it is lkely that the battery is dodgy or it culd be the alternator.

Buying a chap second hand car is often the bst of not only method of btaining your transport and it is sually the most economical. Ask plenty of qestions and never part with your hrd earned cash unless you are 100% stisfied that this is the car for yu.
