With the ever increasing traffic th t we experience on the roads n wadays, is having breakdown cover really an ption? Yes it is still a m tter of choice but to decide gainst having cover is not a v ry sensible option. The growing amount of tr ffic on our roads makes it a v ry uncomfortable situation to break down w thout cover. Just imagine finding yourself in a v hicle breakdown situation in a town or c ty center, on a busy roundabout w th traffic passing by you on ach side? It would probably not be s fe to get out and push the car off the r undabout and unlike a few years go, not many people would even ffer to stop and help. So, wh t would you do? What about br aking down on the motorway? If you d n't have breakdown cover and you're q ite a way from home, you w ll need to contact a local r covery company to come and help. Wh n you eventually contact one, they w ll certainly be happy to get y ur car onto the recovery vehicle and get you off the m torway- that's their business after all. H wever, be prepared for quite a sh ck when you have to pay for th s service.
My recent chat with one s ch recovery agent revealed that the c st for this was around £140 ( nc.vat). However, this is just to get you off the m torway and then the hassle really st rts.
To take you to a g rage will cost you extra. To t ke you home will cost you a lot m re, but here comes the real k cker. If you cannot pay there and th n, you will be asked to st p off the recovery vehicle while y ur car stays on! The car w ll be taken to a storage c mpound while you are left to y ur own devices to get home. Th s by itself would be really nconvenient for most people, but it is the r ality in which some people find th mselves by not having breakdown cover. Aft r all this inconvenience, to get y ur car back you will have to pay the r covery fee plus transport costs to the c mpound. In addition to this you w ll have to pay compound fees. Th s is around £100 release fee pl s daily costs of around £12 to £15. Of c urse you then need to pay r covery charges to get your car h me or to a garage and th n get the car repaired. Phew! So if you got c ught out without breakdown cover and w thout the means to pay on the day you w uld be looking at a bill of round £300 minimum just to get y ur vehicle off the motorway. Is it r ally worth all that hassle when for m ch less than a tow off the m torway, you could get 5-star treatment for a wh le year, and in most cases y ur car would be repaired. If not r paired, you would be recovered from nywhere in the UK back to y ur home with your vehicle and up to s ven passengers. This is not just the nce by the way, it's for up to f ve times each year that you are a m mber.
