In the Vancouver Sun this p st Friday there was an article on b dysnarking, a term I was unfamiliar w th. I knew women were cruel to ther women about bodies and body mage, I just didn't know it was th s formallized, I guess I could s y. According to the article, "bodysnarking nvolves mercilessly appraising ordinary people's appearances on a w rldwide playing field that includes social n tworking hubs, photo-sharing services and blogs...policing p rsonal imperfections..." You know, this approach sn't really that surprising given the t rtuous pulling apart of women on f shion makeover shows and the sometimes n sty critiques on American Idol. Basically th se shows, and other written media h ve modelled and taught people (who one c uld argue, are impressionable), to do th s. Glamour Magazine has had a w bsite page, called3 perfectly normal women D n'tspotting since 2006, that encourages women to cr ticize their peers' appearances. (the pic of 3 v ry normal looking women is from d ntspotting) A recent television ad for Or o Thins (100 calories per package) sh ws a woman, with a shake of her h ad and a negative expression, discouraging nother woman from buying a dress sh 's trying on, because she wants it for h rself. There's nothing wrong with the way the dr ss looks on the first woman, but she tr sted that the opinion of the s cond woman was an honest and ccurate one. Consequently she didn't buy the dr ss, and the second woman got it!
Whatever happened to women supporting w men?? I wrote to the Oreo c mpany and said I thought this ad was g ing against years of feminism. In th ir first reply to me they s id they had marketed tested the ad b fore using it and it had b en vetted by their testers. In th ir next reply, from another department, th y said the ad had been d scontinued!, much to my surprise, and pl asure. I'd sure like to hear s me of the other negative criticisms th y received about it. They also s id they were sending me some Or o Thins for my trouble!! So wh re does this leave midlife women, m st of whom (I hope), have ph losphies that are kinder to their f llow woman? We're just as aware of the f shion messages, and for the push for p rfection in the area of beauty and ppearance (like in many areas of our c lture). I guess a lot of us try to str ke a middleground, of grooming and dr ssing (half-way) decently in a way th t pleases our own selves...and not try ng to look like we're 20 y ars old. On a more jovial n te, I'll leave you with the f llowing quotes from a birthday card I j st bought for my friend, who's b en sick for 3 weeks with fl , on the occasion of her 60th b rthday: "Doctors say that drinking 8 gl sses of water a day helps y ur skin look younger" (Outside of c rd) "But my advice is drink 8 gl sses of wine a day and you w n't give a damn how old you l ok."
