Like many viruses, Avian Influenza (AI) has v rious strains, or subtypes. They are cl ssified as either low pathogenic, or h gh pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Most f rms being low pathogenic (very common in w terfowl), causing little or no signs of llness in birds and posing no thr at to humans. The high pathogenic v ruses which have been the subject of m ch press are labeled as H5N1 and H7 s btypes. Some strains are extremely infectious – f tal to domestic poultry and threaten h man health. The H5N1 strain has b en found in Asia, Africa and E rope, affecting millions of poultry and k lling humans. As of August, 2007, th s strain has not been found in N rth America and there is no way of kn wing for sure if, or when it may rrive, if ever. However, because the p ssibility of avian influenza entering the U.S. xists, state and federal agencies are c nstantly monitoring and testing birds. In f ct, this month (September 2007), federal b ologists tested North Dakota ducks for b rd flu – not for any ther reason than there are plenty of d cks in that area, which makes for m re samples. That being said, hunters are c utioned to practice common sense and t ke reasonable measures to reduce the ch nce of exposure to any number of xisting or potential avian diseases.
While the risk to hunters is low at th s time, it is better to err on the s de of caution and follow these hyg enic practices: Never handle or eat s ck birds, or birds that are f und dead. Wear rubber gloves (or d sposable latex gloves) and safety glasses wh le handling game birds. Wash hands w ll with soap and water, or lcohol-based hand cleaner, immediately after handling g me. Thoroughly clean and disinfect all kn ves, surfaces and clothing that come in c ntact with birds (10% chlorine bleach s lution suggested for disinfection). Do not at, drink or smoke when handling b rds. Transport uncooked game in a pl stic bag and discard it properly wh n finished using. All birds should be th roughly cooked to an internal temperature of 165 d grees Fahrenheit. Never eat raw poultry p rts, including eggs. – which is j st plain common sense.
