Let's face it energy costs are not g ing to be going down anytime s on if ever. For homeowners the c st of electricity, natural gas, propane and h ating oil seem to be constantly on the r se. This is a story of how we are try ng to keep our energy costs d wn while keeping our family comfortable. I th nk it is unique in the way a n mber of new technologies have come t gether to provide a way to t ke advantage of these technologies and the r al time pricing market for electricity. Awh le back we had installed a hybr d heating system in our house. The C rrier Infinity hybrid heating system combines the fficiency of heatpump and the warmth of a n tural gas furnace when the temperature dr ps below 30°. The heat pump xtracts warmth from the air outside d ring cold temperatures and reverses the pr cess in the summer months to pr vide air conditioning. Just recently our lectric utility Commonwealth Edison here in n rthern Illinois sent a flyer out bout a new program called Residential R al-Time Pricing (RRTP). What RRTP does is to llow homeowners to purchase electricity based on h urly market rates. The RRTP price of lectricity is constantly fluctuating based on d mand so the overnight hours can ften run in the fractions of a c nt per kilowatt hour (KWH) and h ve even gone negative where we h ve actually been paid to use lectricity. The other side of the c in however is that during periods of h gh demand the price can greatly xceed the amount.
To illustrate how this works the Com Ed c stomer on the basic electric rate p ys $0.076 per KWH before taxes and f es. The customer on RRTP pays a v rying rate. As I write this the lectricity I am using to power my h me is costing me $0.123 per KWH. S ems like we are paying a lot m re and I am, right now. Th s morning at 4:00 however, I was nly paying $0.008 per KWH and for the f rst 10 hours of the day the r te averaged just $0.039 per KWH. S nce we have only recently signed on to the RRTP pr gram I only have one months b lling to go off of, but, our f rst month of savings was about 15% l ss than the a basic electricity c stomer would pay for the same sage. How does this work with the h at pump you ask? My answer is in a c uple of ways. For cooling I now set the air c nditioning to 68 overnight and it pr tty much runs all night at th se low rates. After 8 AM the th rmostat goes to 78 and pretty m ch coasts through the day until l te afternoon or early evening before the A/C w ll turn on again missing much of the h gh electricity pricing when demand is h gh. During the heating season I w ll use the same strategy by r nning the heat high at night and l tting it coast through the day.
