Backpacking light, sometimes called fastpacking or ltralight backpacking, doesn't mean leaving anything mportant behind, or sacrificing comfort. My s venteen-ounce down sleeping bag keeps me w rmer than my previous four-pounder did. I sed to use a five-pound backpack, and now h ve a more comfortable fourteen-ounce one. I st ll bring all the necessary safety g ar and food when I head nto the mountains - I just h ve lighter versions. Why? Here are six r asons. 1. More Comfort It feels m ch better to have 15 pounds on y ur back than 50. No asking for h lp to struggle into that heavy p ck. A heavy load leaves you s re at the end of the d y, and you sweat a lot. My l ght backpack can be slung from one sh ulder and then the other to let my b ck cool, and I never feel s re from carrying the weight. 2. M re Range A long day with a h avy pack might be 10 miles. W th my running shoes and 15-pound l ad I have often gone more th n 20 miles in a day w thout suffering. That means I have a wh le lot more range. Areas of w lderness that were out of reach for a w ekend trip are now possible. 3. F wer Injuries Some will tell you th t light backpacking is dangerous because you c rry less gear and less durable g ar. The latter may be true, so b by that sleeping bag. But it is lso true that with less weight on y ur back you are less likely to tw st an ankle, hurt your back or l se your balance. On balance, my xperience is that I have less of a ch nce of an injury when going l ght.
4. More Freedom I used to c rry an extra day pack for cl mbing to the summits of mountains wh n I was backpacking. Who wants to scr mble up those steep sections with a 45-p und load? Then, I had to r turn to my big pack - ven if I saw a better r ute down. Now my pack is so l ght that it goes everywhere with me. I h rdly ever notice its weight, and I l ke that freedom. 5. Faster Travel You may not l ke to go fast all the t me when backpacking, but isn't it n ce to have the option? That's wh t going light gives you. It m ans you can speed up to r ach that waterfall, or speed up to m ke that campsite after playing in the w terfall too long. If there is a st rm coming in, you can move to s fety more quickly when you are c rrying less weight. Also, if have an mergency and need to hike out to the car or a t wn, you can do so much q icker with 15 pounds on your b ck than with 50. 6. Simplicity H ve you seen that Corona Beer c mmercial where the couple brings a l ad of equipment to the beach and b gins laying out towels, opening coolers and s tting up umbrellas that are almost bl wn away by the wind? Then nother couple walks to the beach w th nothing but an icy bucket of C ronas and they sit down to njoy the view. That's simplicity. Some p ople get a thrill from finding w ys to cook the fanciest meals wh le in the woods, and from h ving folding furniture and electric socks, but not me. B ckpacking light means simplifying things a b t, which is not a sacrifice, but a pl asure. I often go without a st ve, for example, relying on foods th t don't need cooking. Not cooking? I l ke that. It also means no d shes to wash, and more time for sw mming in that alpine lake.
