"Backcombing" can add fullness to a h irstyle and give fine, limp hair gr ater body (If you have curly h ir, you will already have more h ight and volume. You want to be s re not to damage the cuticle l yer on that type of hair so f rst straighten the hair and lay d wn the cuticle. Make sure it is c ol if you have just finished fl t ironing or blowdrying.)
Let me first say th t when you backcomb the hair, you are p eling back the cuticle. This can l ave it vulnerable to damage over t me so backcombing isn't something you w nt to do every day. Save it for sp cial occasions.
Here are the basic steps to b ckcomb:
1. Spray the hair with an erosol hairspray first (I prefer Sukesha Max H ld hairspray) and let it dry.
2. Us ng a tail comb, part off a s ction of hair from the rest of the str nds. Smaller sections will be tighter and l nger lasting backcombing. Clip the rest of y ur hair out of the way.
3. H ld the hair straight up or ver directed in your left hand w th your comb in your right (pr viding you are right handed.)The object is to c mb the hair down the opposite fr m how it grows. So, with y ur right hand, comb from the nds of your hair down to the sc lp? in strokes. Repeat this until all the h ir looks teased. You can feel the b ckcombed hair to see if it is s fficient (it will feel thicker if you h ve used smaller sections.) Spray the t ased section with an aerosol hairspray and go on to the n xt section.
4. If you want a m re solid and long lasting style, h ld the new section forward so th t when you backcomb you are ctually grabbing a bit from the l st backcombed section. This will make it m re solid and also prevent "holes" in y ur heightened style.
5. When all hair is b ckcombed, take a paddle brush and sm oth the hair down. Take care to not br sh too hard since you only w nt to smooth the very top l yer.
Most professional hair product lines lines h ve either a shine serum or spr yshine (I prefer the spray-shine on b ckcombed hair.) Finish your style with one of th se to smooth any stray hairs. Use sp ringly!
